Just bought one this week & still figuring it out (not that it is that difficult, but work, wife & child also take time. Have a GT2 which I've used for years, so I know Sansamp are built to last & I like what Tech 21 are capable of achieiving in a reasonably priced package.
Anyway, just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on the PSA 1 & as an aside, if anone has a schematic & knows about repairing an Alesis Microverb II.
Happy Halloween

Hi redundant,

I picked up a SansAmp PSA-1 second hand a while back and it quickly became integral to my sound. I use it as a pre-amp for guitar into my non-master volume Marshall JCM800, can do nice clean, overdrive and full on distortions; as a pre-amp for bass into a QSC PLX2 power amp, does smooth, clicky, dirty, whatever you want; and for recording bass direct into the computer via my MOTU interface. Very versatile unit.

The best way I found to get started with the PSA-1 was to find a pre-set you like the basic sound of then just tweak from there.

It would be nice if it had a power switch on the front and the capability to switch the effects loop in/out via midi but they are only minor complaints.

Thanx Stengah
Actually surprised this thread went dead so quickly - from the tons of Harmony Central reviews, I would have thought this wonderful pre-amp would have been popular amongst this crowd, but what do I know? Already started recording at home w/ this & it is a giant leap forward from the Digitech Genesis 1 I've been using (insert your derisive laughter here). I HATE BEING ON A LOW BUDGET. As for the lack of a power switch, I have a solution: an extension cord that takes 2+ plugs & has its own switch - got it rigged up under the desk, which beats getting down on the floor to unplug it.

Hi redundant hope your having fun with your new toy.....i thought a couple of times about gettig some tech 21 stuff..at one point it was a toss up between the trademark 300 head and the pod xt pro.... i got the pod 'cause i can use it for recording and i thought that a 300 watt head was a bit much for gigging... if i remember correctly the PSA 1 is the rackmount pre amp by tech 21..i've heard great things about it...but to be honest i never really found the need for lots of different overdrive or distortion patches....i now use the pod in bypass mode when i'm gigging for some preprogrammed delay/echo patches and a bit of reverb and even then i find i only need 4 or 5 at the most....i used to use three boss pedals for distortion/overdrive.these days i use a seymour duncan twin tube classic overdrive....BTW bro'...i know the the feeling with the wife/children thing ..it's hard to make time to get as much done as you want anymore..i keep promising myself i will drag the 8 track out and do some work but the thoughts of setting everything up and putting it away before the kids get up is a killer.......don't worry about being on a budget ..a lot of us are in the same boat....i just keep an eye on ebay until i see a bargain and set myself a limit i can afford, and if it goes past it there is always the next one..thank god i'm not a collector like some of the other guys and gals here..mrs franzoni would got ballistic if she saw the price of a SP-1 or a VB-2..... ..oh and BTY happy halloween..

Oddly enough FRANZONI, I bought the PSA-1 because of the clean tones (Fender tube amp purists insert your derisive laughter here). Agreed, the dirty Mesa settings (which is one of the few things the Genesis can actually do) are way over the top. But for a versitile package, good value, especially for those of us who record both guitar & bass at home while trying not to wake the wife & child.

I was updating myself with your new unit redundant...it looks like a very serious piece of kit....well done......i think you can safely say it's pro level gear.... can i ask you a question... do you plan to use it live and if so how do you plan to switch presets....?? or will you stick with your other sansamp unit....??... i'm in the middle of building a new rig to incorparate the pod xt pro and a dynacord rack unit (cls 22 rotary speaker simulator) with my pedals...i plan on using a simple line switcher ..the lehle d loop for this, it's a stereo switcher ..basically loop a dynacord..and loop b the pod xt pro... i'm going to make a pedalboard(did woodwork in school for 5 years and i'm a qualified fitter the last 20 years) like one of the pedalpad boards which have spaces for rack units on a floor board so i don't need midi or any fancy switching devices ..just on/off..Q..are you in a originals band at the moment or do you need to have lots of different sounds at you disposal for covers...?? we do mainly covers with a couple of originals but i'm not too anal when it comes to recreating a sound..as an ol' mate of mine says.."near enough be dammed"... sorry for all the questions but i have one more ..it's just that i'm curious about how people run pedals and rack units together in the set ups.....do you use your existing sansamp unit with an amp or straight to the P.A....?? i tried using the pod straight to the rig but i missed my trousers flapping.....never said we were a quiet covers band...... rock n roll baby...

FRANZONI ASKS

FRANZONI asks: Do you plan to use it live and if so how do you plan to switch presets....?? or will you stick with your other sansamp unit....??...

A: While I primarily bought it for home recording, I hope to use it live sometime within the next decade finding serious hobbyist bassists over the age of 30 in Istanbul is near impossible, but I still have my drummer so we might go on as a duo (NO White Stripes covers &/or jokes).

I dont plan (as yet) to be switching presets during songs (there is a midi switch thingy available to do such, but unlikely one in this country), but as I typically go with one basic sound (GT2 California [Mesa Boogie], MOD clean, drive @ 9:00), & then go louder w/ an OD-2 or, as of late, FZ-3. For clean tones, switch off the GT2.

I suspect that while using the PSA1 live Ill probably use the GT2 as a drive pedal.

FRANZONI asks: Are you in a originals band at the moment or do you need to have lots of different sounds at you disposal for covers...??

A: About 50/50 originals/covers, but I agree with "near enough be dammed"... cant be bothered to go looking for the tone that x player used on y song just give me a decent (loud, rough) tone & Im happy.

FRANZONI asks: Do you use your existing sansamp unit with an amp or straight to the P.A....??

A: GT2 with an amp @ the practice studio
There are many practice studios in Istanbul, typically full drum kit, 2 guitar amps (one of which will definitely be a Marshall) & bass amp. One hour rehearsal = 15 YTL (about $10 US).

With a Behringer GDI-100 (w/ 4x12 cab sim) direct into the PA in clubs.

I do not play enough gigs to justify owning a decent amp, especially as I would NEVER get to properly use it at home.

FRANZONI did not ask, but the only serious drawback with Tech 21 is no reverb hence the Alesis Microverb II question.

Sorry bro' but i'm only a dabbler when it comes to electronics...if it's something simple like a broken pot or input/output.... if you don't mind me saying that you can pick the alesis reverb units fairly cheaply here in ireland and on ebay(between 80-150 euro...200-250 for the quadraverbs))...but i've heard that the model you have are supposed to one of the best and superior to the later versions....i reckon if you post on the technical section for the attention of Dr Bob or stinkfoot/andreas it would be your best bet..i have found them to be very helpful and generous with the time and answers......

What is actually wrong with your Microverb?
Post some internal (not blurry Pics)
We'll see if we can help you out..

I have a very close friend (Jozef) who lives in Bodrum in Turkey.
We worked together here in Australia from about 5 years.
Great Guy, great personality.

Greetings Dr. Bob, I was expecting you...

The problem is no sound, but I have a friend of a friend of a friend who makes pedals & amps who can surely fix it. I was looking for a schematic (which I haven't been able to find elsewhere & figured someone here might have) to help make the job easier for him.

As for Bodrum - my wife likes the place but I can't stand the south of Turkey (too many tourists & too many Turks pandering to them).
