Evening all; think its about time I satisfy my G.A.S. with a new amp of sorts - my 40W Hiwatt solid doesn't really cut it any more and I've decided I need a decent stereo amp-
My plan is to drive a 4X12 Marshall with an OD-1 into a racked behringer valve preamp and then into a cheap power amp; something like the marshall 20/20 valvestate or something; I don't want huge amounts of volume at all; but want lots of gain and to be able to use stereo rack effects and pedals too-
Will this give me enough gain with this sort of setup or will it just sound like a limp lettuce? Any other suggestions for alternative ampage?
I'm assuming the valve pre is a mic preamp..i wasn't aware behringer made any special preamps for guitar except for their Pod copies....i don't think the mic preamps drive into huge gain when cranked but you could always use a heavier sounding pedal to overdrive the input if the 0D-1 wasn't doing it for you.......you might need a slightly bigger power amp to drive a 4 X 12 especially if it's a stereo cab...i have a small rack i've been thinking about buying small stereo power amp for...Thomann have some 1 or 2U reasonable....
if your keeping the hiwatt you could use it in the centre of a wet/dry/wet setup like the pros use... i'm in the process of saving up for a few bits and pieces to try this myself.......

Just getting my wet/dry/wet rig sorted too. I don't use it for gigging, so I have things a little easier than Franzoni. I'm using a pair of JCM600 heads and two 1960A cabs for the wet/.../wet stereo pair. And I have a Vibrolux reissue and a JMP45 for the middle "dry" (not really dry).
My experience has been that it pays to wait for a good amp and maybe spend a little more...
Yeah it is the mic preamp (described as a mic/line preamp)
Is there both mono and stereo versions of marshall 4x12 cabs?
I really like the OD-1, and want to try and get an amp to match this fine pedal - totally backwards way of doing things I know ;)
I know nothing about amps; and technology has changed somewhat since I last went shopping- all the modern <400 marshalls et al look a bit rubbish to my untrained eyes, was thinking maybe I could do better with a cabinet and a few pieces of cheap rackery?

Hmmmm got me thinking now......
I was going to speand maybe 400 ($675) on an amp basically, now I'm thinking maybe thats not enough.......
marshall make a stereo 4x12 and 2x12's try get a 2nd hand one as they were made out of ply (like the one Laurie did a topic about recently) the newer ones are made out of MDF and aren't supposed to be as good... i'm planning on a couple of 1x12's( i have the speakers,a couple of celestion V30's) for the wet with either my Marshall superbass head and cab or my musicman combo in the middle for the dry amp.....from what i've read up on this subject you will get better stereo seperation with a couple of cabs rather than running them into one stereo cab..... i use a stereo rig at the moment and it sounds great..it's just i want to use my rack stuff as well and running them in the front end of the amps isn't great for my tone....
Laurie..... that is some setup bro'...glad i don't have to haul that stuff around two or three times a week..... two marshall half stacks and a vibrolux in the middle.......... monster....
i have not used one in about 15 years. Way too much power for what i need nowadays
I use at the moment a 130 Watt musicman 2x12 combo and the marshall head and 2x12 cab... but not for for volume..the spread of sound you get out of two amps with a stereo effect is amazing IMHO..i tried to go back to a mono setup and it just wasn't working for me plus mixing the fender type sparkle of the musicman with the marshalls bottom end thump is really nice tonewise with a strat........
I'd love to get into 'em. I've steered my friend at work to buy 1 UA-610 & 2 Dakings; he loves them to death.
Here's something interesting I've heard, correct me if wrong: You should use a solid-state preamp recording an acoustic & a tube preamp with an electric.
i was looking at both of these as a way of getting a mic signal up to line signal to drive my rack and keep my main amp dryish (plan on running my CE-2 and TR-2 before the amp input with my overdrive/booster and wah) i like the tubepre because if its out of the rack i could use it as a valve DI to warm up my acoustics and mandolin on the low key gigs without having to drag the rack around..... some of that stuff you posted DeFrag is super pricey this side of the pond.....especially the avalon stuff
I'm going to be using it for home use so mega volume is not really necessary - Like the sound of getting a Marshall head but seems I will need 2 identical ones to have proper stereo; and probably 2 cabs would be better if I were to go down that route....
Think I might go for a couple of 2x12s instead and give the power/pre amp thing a try - might be able to afford some of those stereo x-citer and virtualizer type effects too :)
It sounds really good on paper and is really cheap, and also its stereo so I don't need 2 of them - or would it be better just to get 2 of those presonus tube pre ones? (thanks for the link franzoni)
As far as i can see you don't really need a two channel mic pre if you use a a stereo effect after the preamp to split the signal into stereo to feed the power amp.....unless you want the neatness of having everything racked together..some of the behringer stuff got good reviews with a valve change to something decent like a JJ 12AX7 etc............

Yeah it is neatness really; plus I wanted to experiment with a couple of Boss pedals with stereo outputs (like dimension c and metalizer); having stereo input on the preamp means I can use a single pedal board with all effects prior to hitting the preamp; I may only be using one channel of it a lot of the time and using digital FX for the stereo split but it would be really cool to have this functionality -
Yeah a lot of the behringer stuff is really good - for the money *some* of the rack effects are amazing; Some of it doesn't work too well with guitars though; which is why I'm thinking that mic/line preamp might fall into that category; but maybe if I replaced the tubes....... I want to be using od's and distortion and any pedals with analog filters in the pedal chain; and use the digital FX rack for delays/reverbs and panning effects
I reckon this could sound really nice with this combination; but its a dependent on getting the power and preamp combo right - they need to generate a decent tone as well as provide the volume. How about if I was to ditch the behringer preamp idea and get a marshall JMP-1 pre with valvestate power amp? could probably stretch to that on my budget; would it be money well spent?
If your going with a dedicated guitar preamp there is a few to choose from..the JMP has a good rep there was also a more basic two channel 9001 solid state pre if memory serves plus lots of others like the Line 6 pod or Tech 21 ....check out some of the reviews on harmony central for the berhinger mic preamps...some people over there have used them like the way you suggest and said they were pretty good with the preamp valve changed for a better quality one....
