Hey all... Today after work, I'm going down to a local electronics supply store and getting the parts I need for the Keeley DS1 mod. Do you guys have any suggestions?
I've listened to some samples, I like it. However, if I wanted to add a bit more distorion, saaaayyyy, a cross between the DS1 and a MT2, is that possible?
I like the MT2, but I find it has a bit much, yet the DS1, not quit enough. At least for my low volume playing. |

| Doing the full Keeley "ultra plus" mod gives it more grunt than the standard SEM. |

| That is my goal, to do the full mod. I just opened up the pedal, those parts are a lot smaller than I was expecting. |

I've done a few DS-1 mods and while YMMV, I think the Ultra plus is probably about as good as it gets.
The other approach is to take an MT-2 and bring it back closer to the DS-1. That's what I've essentially done with the Stormchaser MOSFET mod I figured out for mine. |

| Hmm... I have a Keely Modded MT2. Maybe I should find a used MT2 and mod that as well. |

The Keeley MT-2 mod has an excellent reputation. The problem I always found with the MT-2 is that it didn't respond well to picking dynamics, plus the usual "nasal" mids. Everyone removes the nasally mids (it's an easy mod) but getting a nice smooth-but-raw distortion with dynamics is a lot harder. I finally found MOSFETS would do the trick... I'd say it's worth a try if you can find a cheapo used MT-2.

You can always send me yours. ;)
So, if I can find one, are you able to help me make the mt2 mod?
* EDIT #2 *
Just found one in my area for $25 Sweet, he still has it, made arrangments to buy it from him today.

Right on, hopefully next weekend. Right now smack dab in the middle of my Keeley Mod. Taking out caps as we speak. |

Got a few issues. Here are the instructions I used. http://www.geocities.com/overdrivespider/DS1/keeleyds1.htm#Top
According to him, on this step here C2, C8, C9, C14 need to have 1uF caps installed and should look like this. ( I used two 0.47 caps in parallel I.E. soldered together to make a 0.94uF cap, yours will probably look different) I did this. The store didn't have any 1uF caps, so I doubled up exactly like he said here. However, they are friggen huge. Causing serious spacing issues. Going to have yank them out and find the proper sized caps and hope the form factor is smaller.
My Switch So, the switch I bought is an ON/ON. However, I have a question about it. It does not stay in the position I toggle it to. It always bounces back to the position I tried to push away from. I don't know if this type of switch has a name other than ON/ON... But, Is this switch ok or do I need to get a different kind?
When I flip the Switch I'm not hearing any difference, is it becaue I have the wrong kind of switch?
Tone Without my EQ pedal turned out, it sounds very nasalie... Is that normal for this mod?a
Thanks for any feedback. |

You can get the small ones if you shop around.

I don't know if this type of switch has a name other than ON/ON... But, Is this switch ok or do I need to get a different kind? You have an ON-ON "momentary action". You need just a regular SPDT ON-ON.
When I flip the Switch I'm not hearing any difference, is it becaue I have the wrong kind of switch? Nope. If the switch has 3 terminals it will be switching OK (just wont hold in the second position). Probably because you have one of the diodes around the wrong way.
Tone Without my EQ pedal turned out, it sounds very nasalie... Is that normal for this mod?a No..... should have GRUNT.
Thanks for any feedback.

Ok, so i'm off to another store today. See if they have smaller caps and get a different switch.
Thanks Laurie |

Hi RickBlacker Congrats on your DS-1 Mod. If you a chance please upload some pics. It may help out another person in the future who is doing/attempting the same mod.

DAMN IT. I get to take it back apart. When I was putting my tools and what not away, I found a cap still in the container that I didn't put in, which means I used the wrong cap near the clipping diodes. I calls for a 1uf, what I put in there was a .47uf. |

Hey Bob... You know, I would but I didn't take any pics, I went by the instructions I found on here, http://www.geocities.com/overdrivespider/DS1/keeleyds1.htm#Top
HOWEVER, I promise, when I do my MT-2 Storm Trooper mod that Laurie has, I'll do a nice picture/tutorial then. |
