i have been trying some different things with my pedals and have set up them some ways and have not been getting a signal sometimes..then i got a good signal another way

what is the difference between the two: input/output and send/return

Why don't you read the manual first?

Anyway;
input is where your guitar goes in
output is where you plug your amp in.
Send goes to the input of the pedals
return comes from the output of your pedals

eventually you can choose to put modulation effects such as delay between the output and your amp and not in the send/return loop.

Mesjoggah nails it.
Its not exactly rocket science.

"input is where your guitar goes in
output is where you plug your amp in.
Send goes to the input of the pedals
return comes from the output of your pedals"

This is as simple as a loop gets:

Here's an interesting DIY:

Toggling between two different instruments into a single amplifier:

Toggling multiple effects in a single group, or toggling a single effect which does not have a true bypass:

Of course, the Boss LS-2 manual has some examples you may wish to review as well.

ToadWorks makes some interesting units.

Here's the Enveloope with a built in optical envelope follower:

& the RoundAbout that switches the order of the loops for you:

Lehle makes some of the best IMFO:

Then there's LoopMaster:
