I do this too, but I add baking soda to the water and let 'em boil at least 15 minutes. Works great.

Then you need to try flats...they nail the "thuddy" sound(I say this in a good way) and flats last a long time, much longer than roundwounds(although the plains will obviously have to be replaced more often).

Check! I change mine when they break.

When I was playing a lot more and doing constant recitals I'd change them every week and/or the day before a recital. And this was on a Floyd Rose...

These days maybe twice a year. Plus I have more guitars now so less wear in total.

All Maton's are now factory fitted with Elixers.

Cheers Dr Bob, I did not know that! Is that a recent thing? I mean my EM325C is dated 05/08... is that recent enough that the strings would be Elixers?

Hi nathu
I'm not certain when they switched to Elixer Strings.
Here is a link on their "specifications" page.
http://www.maton.com.au/acoustics/specifications.html

The owners booklet that came with your 325 might contain a word or two about where yours came fitted with Elixers.
It is definitely mentioned in my booklet.
My booklet is the one that you can download here:
http://www.maton.com.au/service/warranty-care.html

Here is an extract directly from their Specs page:
All Maton acoustic guitars are strung with
Elixir Ultra-Thin NANOWEB coated light gauge strings (0.012 - 0.053)
The use of Elixir Strings ensures that each Maton Guitar will perform to its maximum potential,
even after months of being played in a retail store.

And here is the link to Elixer Strings if anyone is interested:
http://www.elixirstrings.com/

I hope this helps.
Regards Dr. Bob.

Perhaps we should start a seperate thread about Maton Guitars?
