well i'm a big fan of phasers but the PH-3 i have right now isn't really doing it for me so i'm thinking of packing it in for either the PH-1r or the PH-2

i love just the basic sounding phase sound so can people tell me what they think of these?

what are the diff modes like on the PH-2?

is the PH-1r a one-trick-pony?

does the PH-1 sound better than both?

I have both PH-2 (MIJ) and PH-1, I like PH-1 a lot more because its much easier to dial in a good phaser sound. There are much more possibilities with PH-2 but PH-1 nails THE phaser-sound easy. PH-2 takes a while to dial in something close to PH-1.
PH-1 IS a 70s phaser sound nearly at every setting, and I like that.

^^ that's cool if you like that sound, and i do! what pisses me off bout the PH-3 is that there are great modes on it but the 4-stage is too low in volume, the 8 and 12 are too thick and bassy and the 10 is a tad too thin.

is there a sound diff (e.g. volume, EQ etc.) between the modes on the PH-2?

To my ears, Mode I is the normal setting, and Mode II is a much deeper effect with a pronounced mid-scooped tone. You need to be careful with the resonance setting in Mode II to avoid "eardrums-shattered-by-aeroplane-swoosh" syndrome.

I don't notice any volume drop with either mode...

yup. im agreeing with leeroy on this one. mode 1 sounds like your typical phaser. very nice. Mode 2 is a 12 step (i think) with any resonance whatsoever, the sound is pretty well useless.

if you are into making spacey noises or experimenting with sounds, Mode 2 is great.

you still have mode 1 on the PH2, and it sounds great for classic phase sounds. it just has a mode 2 that happens to be partially unusable. i find mode 1 of the PH-2 to sound similar to the PH-1. if possible, you should try both phasers and see which one suits your playing better.

that's hard to do with the Ph-1 and Ph-1r available on eBay only. i'll prob go for the PH-2 if the first mode on it sounds like classic phasers.

thanks!

does anyone know if there's a mod you can do on the PH-3 to even out the volume and EQ differences with the different modes?

The PH-1r is essentially the PH-2 without a mode switch... If you can live without the crazy jetplane WHOOOOOOSH!!!!!!!, I'd go for the PH-1r (three-knob pedals look much better, don't they?)

i had a similar question about phasers its under the thread.. phasers which one..? i got a lot of replies and i decided to go for the a ph2 on ebay i am very happy with it and i ended chasing down a bf2 as well, both of which are on my pedal board(11 boss pedals)and have become a big part of our sound, were are mostly a covers band a lot of 70's and 80's i.e police,u2,pink floyd etc so these pedals really help me get the sound of these artists....

I never thought that I'd ever find another phaser that I'd like as much as the Maestro PS-1A, but the PH-1r comes extremely close...
