Well, it ain't an MT-2, but it IS mosfet clipping in a Boss pedal, on all guitar tracks. I can't reveal which pedal, but it's not critical. The mosfets assert themselves pretty strongly, IMO.

I slapped it together last night and today with Garage Band.
Rhythm tracks are a tricked out Squier 51 with GFS Dream 180's. "Lead" track is an ESP H100 with "mystery" neck PAF (all that is used for the "lead").
It's rough and a bit muffled, but you should get the general idea. I think it's also pretty clear that I'm a mad scientist first and foremost, and guitar shredder a very distant second!
Mosfets are great for straight up rock, IMO. I used a Vibrolux Reverb, of all amps! |

Hey moonwatcher - off topic, but I am looking at a Vibrolux reverb RI locally. What do you think of it? What do you reckon a fair price for a mint one (mid 90's) would be? |

The 90's Vibrolux is the "custom" model, IIRC. If this is the case, it shares A LOT more in common with older tweed Fenders - I believe that there's no neg. feedback loop in that amp, and that it breaks up SUPER early...
...If that's the case, it's probably great for blooz and such. Mine's a '71, and she starts letting go @ 4 on the dial, with the neg. FB loop.
The old VR's are great for pedals, cuz you get about a 50/50 dirt balance. The RI might break up too early for peds - can you try before you buy?
Lotsa folks pick on the PCB construction - I redid a DRRI for a friend, and I didn't think that the stock board was really that bad.
Considering you should be able to get a silverface VR for 700 (US) or less, I'd think that would put the VRRI at around 400-500. Everyone's going crazy for Princenton Reverbs and Champs these days. It's driven down the price on everything else. |

Hi MoonWatcher & Guys
Like my Fender 75, weren't the Champs a Paul Rivera (for fender) Design?
The 75 has an Ultra-linear output stage.
Unlike Zen's unending list of amps & gear (I meant that in a good/nice/informed way). It's the best amp that I have owned to date.

Oh Yeah I forgot to mention.
The MOSFET clipper/s sound pretty good.
It would be nice to hear a comparison, of a stock & the modded one as well.
GarageBand, another (Real-Computer) user I see... Which model do you own?

I just got another stock unit yesterday, so I guess that an A/B is definitely in order...
I've currently got a Mini 2.0 GHz "real computer".
Rivera did the Super Champ, DRII, Evil Twin, etc.
If you've never heard anything by The Mermen, check 'em out. Jim uses nothing but red knobbed Twins and Dual Showmans. |

Here's a cleaned up version with the goofy lead removed:
http://soundclick.com/share?songid=6812820
I tweaked the rhythm guitars so that you can hear them better (slight eq nudge @ 100 hz and 2 khz only). No compression/delay/fillers/byproducts/etc... |

Hi MoonWatcher very nice, how much of the sound is attributable to the MOSFET Clipper, & how much is related to the other partial M.A.(?) mod, that you spoke about.

Hey Dr. Bob -
This is a different Boss ped than the MT-2, so there's no MA mod at all in it.
You are hearing the mosfets in full - they aren't bypassed with a cap bleeding highs. And they're being run fairly hard.
I was playing with the MT-2 again this morning, and still want to nix the tantalums and push the brights up a touch higher. I'll pull the rest of the MA stuff out while I'm in there (it ain't much). Then you'll get a clip of the MT-2, as well.
Regards, MW |
