So I just won a mint ph-1r on ebay for �40, boxed. Good deal?
I'm not really sure what they go for but the condition of it tempted me, and I have been after a phaser for a while.

What does everyone think of it? looking back through past posts the general consensus seems to be its a bit more "rock" than the ph-1. Anyone care to elaborate? |

I haven't got a PH-1... but I do have a PH-1r and a Small Stone.
The PH-1r is slightly less rich than the Small Stone, but it does slow phasing much, much better. There are many more unusual phase sounds to be had from the PH-1r; it's a little more tricky to dial in a "stock" phaser sound than on a one-knob pedal like the Small Stone or Phase 90, but if you wanted those sounds you'd have bought one of those pedals!

Ph1r is amazing for clean passages.. just think of the era it was made in - it kicks ass for reggae 
I found it sweeter and wider sounding than a phase 90, mine had the r28 mod too.. |

Absolute keeper.
A rare pedal that lest you use the rate and depth in any position to get a great phase sound, like all modulators, too much rate, just gets goofy.
Make sure yours has no issues, i.e., a click in the FET switch, or volume DECREASE.
BTW, what is the serial number on it?

| I prefer the ph-1r over the ph-1, it can do more and get "more" of a certain sound that you want over the ph-1 that is kindof just there for the ride. |

| definately a good deal.. i love my PH-1r and use it for all my clean phase sounds. ive said it before but teamed up with my StratoTele's single coils i get Pink Floyds "Breathe" tone dead on |

| Hey All, I just posted that i'm looking for a PH-1r so i figured since this is right up my alley i would ask about the sound of this particular type phaser since i have only heard nothing but great things about 4 stage phasers. is the ph-1r like a chorusie type phaser? | The PH-1r is a 4 stage phaser, the PH-2 has two modes, which do (I think) 8 and 12 stage phasing. The end result is that the PH-2 has a thicker phase sound - not really chorus like, a bit more like a rotary speaker sound. The PH-2 works well with high-gain distortion sounds, the PH-1r is better on everything else. |

Thanks for all your replies! It turned up today and is in excellent condition. Bizarrely, Included in the box were the instructions for the boss dm-3 and a nice A4 glossy advert for the TU-12H tuner. The pedal was made October 1981. I think it was meant to be a silver screw but a previous owner switched for a normal one because it says on the bottom about using a coin to access the battery compartment.
It absolutely nails the pink floyd sound on clean and works well with a bit of distortion or overdrive, but not metal distortion. It has a nice range of useable tones and all in all I'm very happy with it, and slowly working my way towards a great pedal board, including quite a few boss classics (sd-1, ds-1, ce-2, mz-2, dm-2, ph-1r,ge-7, cs-3).
