I had the same problem with a PH-2... if you get a chance, unscrew the bottom plate and look for a code number on the PCB (starting with either 052 or 229), and/or the possible date of production of the compander chip. bossarea had a good breakdown of these codes here:

I haven't yet had a chance to get into that aspect of Boss minutae, though.... |
