I've got the Keeley 2-knob version - tricky to set up well and it can be a bit heavy on the treble loss for me - I like comps to be brighter (CS-2 lets more treble through IMHO). Easy to push a lightly driven tube amp into juicy overdrive with it though.
Had a lot of fun in the past at a gig with a Dod Milkbox - maybe not to everyone's taste but it worked for me, although by the end of the gig I was using more as a boost than a comp - not subtle. Just remember to smile at the thought of the labels they gave to the controls on the earlier ones - 'cream', 'spill'...
I'd like to hear about the JangleBox too - they keep coming up on ebay. |

I just learned that my CS2 is from the first month of issue. It's very mint in the box.
I wonder if that maximizes its value? I was thinking of trading it for a pro rehoused DM3 but now I am not so sure..

Hi solewheelin
IMHO - I would keep the "Minty Early CS-2" The valve of the CS-2 will hold, for collectors.
But if you are really wanting the DM-3, then it will be a tougher choice. Why was the DM-3 re-housed, & does the owner, still have the original case?
It would be nice to see pics of this pro. re-housed DM-3.

Hi The_Doc
The MilkBox is one of the compressors, that I have been after & it's still not in my humble collection of Compressors/pedals.
Can you please tell us a bit more about it. I have an awesome demo I can PM to you, it used the same THAT brand Chips, that are in the "SSL mixing desks" Compressor/Channel strips.
Although for some reason, it get a "noisy" comment in the reviews. It might be a slight bug in the way DOD applied the circuit design. or I'm betting at all knobs on FULL TILT.

Hi Dr.Bob,
Thanks for the PM with the Milkbox demo - nice! It definitely can sound that smooth and I think it's much better with single coils. Here's my newish Milkbox:

What's most noticable is the high gain that comes through the level control - not inherently noisey but naturally gets worse as that gain builds. I've probably got 6 or 7 comps in my collection and nothing comes near this one in terms of volume lift. You certainly won't need another high impedance pedal before it to push this one.
The 'Hi Exp' is basically a filter (maybe even a boost) to the treble frequencies: this is what I like about the pedal. Really brings out a Tele twang - better than the CS-2 I think. Knocks spots off the CS-3 - I really can't get a smooth compressed tone out of that one - I've had it a while too and used it through all sorts of amps (sorry Boss - back to the drawing board for that one for me).
The 'Attack' control does what it says - quick vs slow - on the slow setting you still don't get anything like the squash you get on a CS-1 (I really like the CS-1 on heavily distorted solos when recording - seems to add something - I don't know what - maybe the really slow attack, but worth trying although you might need a gate to tame it).
This playing around made me think a bit more about comps, so I had a quick comparison session with an old MXR favourite of mine:

Compared to the MXR (early block log version) both the Milkbox and the CS-2 have less of a distinctive 'voice' to my ear. The MXR is very subtle but somehow has a warmer, richer tone to it - no real volume boost though (hence I haven't used it live).
Both the CS-2 and Milkbox work well for funky strumming (aka Doobie Brothers Long Train Running) but I think the Milkbox wins for solos (think Stratty, laid back blues, clean Dave Gilmore, etc). The Milkbox also cuts it for me as an extra boost when things get loud and manic towards the end of a gig & the encores - with my rig it just gives me a bit of extra cut-through when the rest of the band are going flat out.
Hope this helps. Time to grab the rest of the comps and have some more fun tonight. the_doc
PS: switched on all three together - supersquash - horrible PSS: despite what I've read about the switches on the DODs, I gigged a couple of times with this - at outdoor events, in the rain with heavy stomping on it and it didn't let me down - suppose it depends on how careful you are with your gear. |

Sorry for the late response. He actually decided to keep it. It was fine because I decided to keep my CS2. The pedal was rehoused by Pacific custom Pedals. The case was sold already. I had his thread, but he deleted it along with the picture. Let me know if you really want to see it and I can email him for it. It was rehoused in a hammond style case a bit smaller than a normal boss pedal. And it was red :) Damn now I am GASing for a CS1..
