hi guys. i'm still new to modding and i don't have any electronics background. i just solder and then test it, and if i like it, it stays. i started modding with my aca od-1 which after its success, i've tried to improve my mit ds-1 which i think is now better than stock. i've also modded a boston engineering od100 which is great to mod on since its built and laid out like a boss. since parts are sometimes hard to come by here, i use parts from other devices like a sony betamax player which yeilded an rca 4558. i also used the diodes from this device. what i've mainly done in the ds-1 and the od100 is double the diodes, sometimes in series, some opposite to each other. are there any hidden dangers i should be aware of?

Being mostly self taught in modding, you can't really break a pedal, you can destroy it or ruin it.
One is oversoldering, which I'm guilty of too.
The pcbs in the pedals are only meant for one time contact with heat. This can cause the tracks to lift. If you plan to solder in one area alot, attach some wires and a breadboard.

What is the rca 4558 sound like? Being from a Betamax, you can bet its old. Incidentally the 4558C chip that we all see in the Boss service notes where also used in audio devices like the Beta. It had a habit of shimmering at higher frequencies.

Diodes can be fun, its like picking out which topping to put on your sundae. What did you mean by 'some opposite to each other'? The DS1 and the SD1(od100 im guessing)have different types of clippings.
Make sure you put the diodes in the same direction shown on the pcb and you can't go wrong.

cheers and good luck

*i almost destroyed my ds-1 because of oversoldering.
*the rca 4558 sounds good on the od-1, but i haven't used it yet on stage volume, only bedroom levels. i'll give you my observations on this after i use it onstage.
*i wanted to put on a single in line to double line opamp adapter like the one monte allums uses, in my ds-1 so i can switch chips but i can't find it here in the shops. myabe its exclusive to monte allums?
*what i meant about the diodes "opposite to each other" is that some are not in the same direction as the other and they seem to have a slight (sometimes good, sometimes bad or no effect) effect on sound. i always start with them facing the opposite direction, then if i don't like or there is no effect, i put them in the same direction. i'm learning a lot here. thanks!

did i ruin it? the track where two cathodes of two adjacent diodes were attached disintegrated due to over-soldering, leaving the second cathode without a place to be soldered on. is it ok to solder the second cathode to the first cathode since are actually on the same track? please help! thanks

Which diode pads did you ruin?
The three on the left are the clipping, and the left one is the power/resistor combo. or post some pics. Should be easy to fix with some jumpers.

a little correction to my question. it is in a ds-1 and it was actually the cathode of d5 and the anode of d4 with d4 losing its part of the track. i put a jumper between them and it seems to work fine. i'll cross my fingers it will be ok in the long run. is it ok to use combinations of diodes like the one in a glass with the sealed one or with a led? thanks, christo.

Hi leonard d rock

Oh the joys & tribulations of Modding.
Even after you lift a few tracks.....

Just don't forget that it's supposed to be a heap of fun.

i agree with you dr. bob. thats what makes it enjoyable. soldering a diode on, or removing thing then plugging in to see if what you did made a difference in a pedal which already shows some serious battle scars inflicted by me. my wife asks "why are you always opening up those thing?" i always reply "better to play with a boss pedals than play around with other women" which makes her smile. no matter how many times i have to open up, solder/desolder, close and plug in again and again, its really a tonful of fun. mabuhay! I dunno, I rather like playing with women. I suppose it helps to be unfettered.

well, it works with her, makes her smile and loves me for it.it also is a good reason/answer for the following GAS question: "why do you need to buy another pedal/guitar/amp? you only have two hands/feet?"thanks for all the help guys! the ds-1 is alive and rocking again.

thanks christo. yup, these links will keep me busy as well as save a lot of grief from a future modder who will come across these pages.shouldn't we put these links in a separate thread for easy reference?
