Needs the fret board lemon-oiling up a bit (Gibson must store them a while) but, at long last, I've finally found a new one that I like. I only went in my local music store to pick up a DD-7 and came out with an FBM-1, FDR-1 and a Taylor 114 (for my daughter) plus the 335! Mad, bad, sad, gas.....
Extremely happy though - all round! Great to hear my 16 year old daughter singing spanish songs with the Taylor too - sounds so much better than the old classic nylon guitar she had.
Here's a picture of the 335, annoying Mrs The_Doc in our lounge...

Thanks Franzoni - you can read me like a book mate!
I'm a big Larry Carlton fan and the reason I haven't gone for the stock 335 earlier was because I was thinking about the LC Custom shop version but it is pricey at these exchange rates and Gibson can, apparently, take up to a year to complete an order - not sure I believe that though as I've seen them advertised in the UK (granted - they probably haven't got them in stock though). Even this 'stock' model came with a Gibson Custom Shop certificate - I'm told they are all made by the Custom Shop now.
This one just came along and it was like, spot-on, so I had to have it. It won't get an airing with the band for a while until I've got it played in and it will be used for a short rock 'n roll mini-set that we do (JB Goode, No Particular Place To Go, etc). In private it will be used to bang out Room 335 and others - I just need a few £000 to land a Dumble amp - some chance! For now, I'll be using a Hermida Zendrive through a Peavey Delta Blues combo - nice sound.
I go to another world with that guitarist 'glazed look in the eyes' thing when I fire up a rig like that...sweet and my other half knows just to ignore me once I'm in that zone - two way conversation becomes between me and my guitar only at that point! |

' Guitarist' had an article about Gibsons a while back and commented on the fact that they don't bother oiling the fretboard but if you like the darker finish(i do as well) the lemon oil should do the trick..my yamaha classical and walden 12 string both needed it done as well and came up great afterwards..... |

Bang on DeFrag - that's my mantra - you only live once and ya can't take it with you - enjoy it while you can!!! Crappy things happen all the time and often you can't stop them - but good things - you can make them happen and I try to do that when I can.
All the work I do with the band is now 100% for children's charities and it's incredibly rewarding. So I feel that I'm giving something back through what I do and I happen to have a rockin good time with a group of like-minded semi-pro musicians whilst I'm at it!!
Win / win all round |

Thanks Franzoni - that would explain it - the guys in the store pointed it out but weren't sure why it was like that. I like the necks darker, like you, and I did a similar oiling job on my PRS Custom 22 which is my main gigging guitar and it came up really good. Seemed to play better too - particularly on the really wide bends and double-stops - guess it should really |

Thanks Dr.Bob - hope all is well with you BTW - I've been a bit out of it lately - too busy with non-music things!
I'm not quite banished to the guest room (yet!), mate but I do have to spend tonight with the in-laws - not that I mind - they are great people but it's valuable time with my new baby being wasted! Given my GAS indiscretion, it's not the time to push that one I think
More worryingly, Mrs The_Doc has decided that she is going to book where we are going on holiday this year and that could be very painful on the wallet now - bad timing on my part but it's well worth it. Worse still, she's colluding with my two daughters too - now that's really worrying - although my youngest owes me some air-cover as she ended up with the Taylor! |

Defrag - if she knew what I called her on this forum - I'd pay for it man, I mean, seriously pay for it ! Even my band know her as Mrs The_Doc !
She's 7 years younger than me too - so I'd have a job getting away from her!
Lovely lady though for putting up with me. |

| Looks lovely, I'm very jealous. Gibson have a model called the es-339 that was reviewed recently in Guitarist that would be perfect for me. When i tried out a 335 in a shop I felt like a child playing it, I'm 5 foot 10 but this thing was huge! So the smaller 339 would be perfect. Gotta love the extra semi hollow body character. |

Thanks and you are right jaymzHal - it's a big beast - I'm only 5 foot 7! Reminds me of Bill Nelson (you might remember him - BeBop Delux) - he used to play them and was a real skinny guy - looked massive
Sounds the dogs though - especially on the neck p/u. |

Great 335.. so jealous!! Mrs_verivorax would probably post here saying that I'd been dismembered if I came home with one of those..
In reference to the "custom shop" details.. all the laminate ES-guitars are made in the Memphis custom shop, which produces only that kind of guitar (335, 339, 137, 175) The solid-body customs and carved archtops (Super400, L-7, etc) are made in the Nashville custom shop - they might also make the re-issue lam. models, but I'm not sure.
Now, what's important is that little certificate of authenticity. It only comes with guitars from one of the custom shops (however stock the guitar may be), and I've been told that they will NEVER reproduce one of those certificates under ANY circumstances... so make sure it's safe if you ever plan on re-selling the instrument.

Thanks verivorax - the explanation of the "custom shop" details is much appreciated - that was niggling me. Certificate suitably filed in a safe place with the others.
Mrs The_Doc very nearly did dismember me once when I came home from a biz trip with a guitar case - what I didn't tell her was that it contained a brand new US Telecaster. When she eventually sussed what had gone on, pleading my case for the defence I said something that I'll never forget..."...just smell that guitar love, how could I possibly resist that...?"
I don't know why I said it after pulling a stunt like that and Mrs The_Doc has reminded me of it ever since - guess what she said when she saw the 335 - you got it..."hope it smells nice!"
She still loves me and my GAS though - I wouldn't swap either of them |
