I'm getting ready to replace my cool-but-too-large Rocktron Short Timer with a pair of smaller delay stompboxes. I already have a DD-3 standing by, but I'm trying to figure out what the other one should be.

Years ago, I used a DM-2, later, DD-2's and -3's. I always thought the DD's were generally too bright - OK for some stuff, but hard to tame for others.

So, I was thinking an MXR Carbon Copy would be a good complement to my DD-3. One analog voice, one digital. However, I have some doubts about the MXR's reliability. Besides, why spend $140 bucks on a new Carbon Copy when used DD-3's are going for $60-80 every day of the week?

Whew. Glad I got all that out of my system. Anyway, on to the questions.

1) Has anybody tried a DD-3 with a brightness-reducing mod? I think some people put a small cap to ground on the feedback pot to shunt away some the extra treble. Does this mod make the sound significantly better/different than a stock DD-3?

2) Will the DD-3 go into infinite feedback with the control maxed? (We just moved; mine is packed or I'd try it.) One of the advantages of the Carbon Copy is the infinite feedback - not something I'd use a lot, but it's nice to have the option.

Hi Rich i had a similar dilimma a while back playing with the idea of getting a DM-3 etc for my rig for real analogue echo....

first off i use two DD-3'S in my set up,i also have a small rack with a xt pro which i use mainly for extra delay and reverb and it's stereo effects loop(i'm in the process of building a new rig and this was lying around gathering dust plus i didn't have a spare 200/300 euro for a DM series pedal...) of the DD-3'S both are MIT but i find that the older of the two(it's about 96) is more 'analogue' in it's repeats but of course not a true analogue echo but it's my 'go to' delay 7/10 times every gig for a bit of echo on a solo, the newer one i have set on a longer delay setting and is better for a multi tap type of thing like the beginning of 'the wall' or 'run like hell' by the floyd...the POD's sims of analogue delays are IMHO very good also it has stereo delays and a whole host of other type of analogue echo and reverb types that i've only started experimenting with and i can pre-programme the delay times or use the tap tempo function the only thing is i need the older FBV 4 for simple switching options and for the tap tempo function, basically i turned off all the fancy amp and cab sims and use it like a rack delay/reverb....

i remember the mod you discussed being floated around on the forum a while back and i'm sure it's in the tech section somewhere...i think the general consensus was it was pretty good for 'darkening' the sound....the was if i remember correctly also the option of putting a mini toggle switch to switch between the regular DD-3 sound and the 'mod'.....

my gear is in our van between gigs these days except for the guitars so i don't mess around as much as i used to with the pedals and i never really whack the DD-3 up full,to do what you describe plus i never had a real analogue delay to compare it to...but a while back we were messing around with one of the DD-3's on the singers mic during rehearsal and what we did for a laugh was to turn the all the settings up full..the sound got really 'out there'... like something from pink floyd at pompeii etc....i got him to scream into the mic and hit the pedal it went on for ages...........hope this helps........

BTW ... i'm a bit of a Gilmour/Pink Floyd fan if you didn't notice......

Yeah, if it was my only delay, I'd make it switchable. However, with two DD-3's on the board, I think I'd mod one and leave one stock.

My experience modding Boss pedals is that adding mini-toggles is a pain. Things are just too tight inside and the wiring can get sloppy. Unless I really need the flexibility, a prefer well-tuned one-trick ponies.

I had an SD-1 that I did Monte Allums' GT mod on - with TWO mini-toggles. It was a nice pedal, but... I ended up settling on the one SD-1 sound I used the most, and modding a second SD-1 to match with no toggle switches. I call it my ODD mod, adn it's on my pedalboard.

You could also put the toggle in the battery chamber, how often do you use a battery in a DD3? Wrap it in tape to insulate it.
