for use as a distortion or overdrive circuit, are these two circuits the same? If not, what would the differences be?

The first circuit is pointless. You will get the same sound if you remove one diode from each direction.

The second circuit makes more sense if you want more output and less compression.

It also depends on the type of diodes involved and the context of the
circuitry around the diodes, e.g. are the diodes used in the feedback
loop of an opamp or as shunt at the output of the opamp ?

What if different types of diodes are used? like if the inner pair was silicon and the outer pair was germanium? Would they cancel out?
