I'm partial to older Crowns - can sometimes pick them up cheap.
The other option is Behringer amps... (DON'T FLAME ME GUYS). I've actually had good experience, as long as you don't push them too hard. I'm thinking a used EP1500 (rule of thumb is to have maybe twice the power you think you need ). Should be only a few hundred bucks.

One more comment... I am a JBL-o-holic. I have 12 pairs of them and 4 dual-18 subs.
The one thing I have found over years of using them is that for them to sound good, they need an amp with an ENORMOUS damping factor (the drivers generate huge back-emf and if it isn't controlled they sound terrible - if it is controlled, JBLs sound awesome!), plus you need really thick cables for the same reason (i use either 10 gage or 12 gauge "twinned").
I use Crown CE2000's pretty much exclusively for driving the JBLs. I've found the Crowns have enough grunt to keep the drivers under control and they sound great together.

My duo partner has an uncle who works for JBL It's a beautiful thing
I'm pushing my Control's now with a Mackie 408m with12 ga wire.(looks like extention cord) sounds good but I want to use the two 250watt amps of the 408 for the mains. we've been using JBL G724 (15 and a horn) for 18 years in our gig system and they're awesome. We also have an EON powered sub. all powered with a Mackie 808s (1200 watts) gets the job done with power to spare. The system I'm building is for home praticing and to use as backup should something happen to our gig rig. |
