...for the newB...I read the threads for pedals4pv and DeFrag on their quests to get the right amp, and I guess I really have only one more question for my situation. I'm going to be gigging on my eternal "Tour of the Basements" in support of my latest yet-to-be released, recorded, written or even conceptualized album "I'm Only in it for the Beer"...seriously, I'll never be a club act, so I'm looking for something that will give me lovely tube tone and the abilty to hold my own with the drums, bass, keys, etc. in friend's basements, sound rooms, garages and such. What should be I looking at, wattage-wise? |

| I'd say around 15 watts should be fine, though a 5 watt Epi Valve Junior stack may also do the trick too... |

Class-A.. warm, clean, pure tone. Even a 15-watt amp can get loud enough for basement gigs & small clubs. |

I gig regularly with a Victoria Regal; 15 watts class A into a 15" speaker...more than enough even for that situation. As far as "basement" work, it depends on how many people are gonna be rockin' out in that little basement and how loud you're looking to get. A little three piece? You won't need a lotta power. On the other hand if it's six or seven pieces with an ambitious drummer, a Twin Reverb may be in the offing... |

| Hi All! Thanks for your input so far, it's very helpful. I haven't seen a lot of amps in that power range - a few smaller, a lot larger. I've been scouring the local classifieds and so far (in my budget) there was a Peavey Royal 8 - Class "A" but only 5 watts, and a Vox Valvetronix 50, (which is not really tube, is it?), a '72 Vibro Champ (6 watts)..anyone hear of the ELK Stageman?...Traynor YCV20... |

Traynor make good quality stuff, but if the Vibro Champ is priced right I'd go for it. The Vox is pretty big for a basement, and is a hybrid amp. I have never heard the Peavey Royal 8, but I am very impressed with the classic 30 so far, and would recomend it to anyone. If you're looking for a used tube amp, factor a new set of tubes into the price, and you won't go to far wrong. |

| The Vibro seems a bit pricey at $375, and the YCV20 is the same, while the Royal 8 is only $150...the Vox is $250... |

Looks like your going to be 4evrnewB 4 pv New tubes would only be 25 bucks if they are old in that Royal 8. One 12ax7 and one el84. |

I've heard mixed reviews, but most seem to be on the positive side. Plus you may be able to get one of these at a great closeout price soon because Crate offers a new series of V-Series amps. They have a Single-End, Class A, 18watt, 2x12 combo (with one channel!), that I am seriously thinking of getting if Santa leaves me some money in my stocking. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Crate-V-Series-V18212-18W-2x12-Tube-Guitar-Combo-Amp?sku=487055 |

For basement gigs with friends I think 5W is too little, 15W (not solid state) will do it if the speaker is efficient enough. Fender Blues Jr and Pro Jr comes to mind. Laney do a 15W thats less expensive but not as good sound wise. At 30W there are many good ones, my favourite is Carvin Vintage 33, not that easy to find though. For apartment gigging 15W is too much, remember that you should drive a tube amp quite hard to get the best out of it. You could use a power soak, but the good ones arent cheap.
