Ok everyone, I am trying to configure my effects rig, but I amnot sure how I want to do this/what route i want to go. I own a bunch of boss stomp boxes and an rc-50. I am trying to figure out if I should just switch to multi fx for the most part (hence my post looking for a gt-5 in the wtb forum). My current thought is that I will get the gt-5 and maybe run a couple pedals in front of and after that in my chain (want to keep the dc-2, ps-5 and dd-6 or dd-3 and possibly a different compressor). does this make sense/is there any advice on how to combine the gt-5 with stompboxes?

Also, I am running this into my 2x12 combo amo which has an effects loop that can be set in parallel or series, any thoughts on which to use? Also, is there a way to make the gt-5 sound good going into a guitar amp (I've read a lot of reviews saying that it is only worth getting if you plan on running into a mixer, but I am not sure if people are just not using quality amps or taking the time to set it up correctly for a guitar amp)

Basically, I want to have simplicity and functionality without compromising too much tone, ad not having a million cables/connections and wires all over the place on a monstrous pedal board. I want a versatile set up that can be transported from place to place with minimal set-up time, so I am pretty sure the multi fx is the way to go, because I currently use a lot of stomp-boxes and am always having to choose my favorite 6 to go jam with since I have a small pedal board.

More questions to come, but any opinions in the mean time would be greatly appreciated. Also, any opinions about other pedals/ideas that would work well in addition to the gt-5/rc-50?

I think your in a slightly same boat i was in a while back trying to incorparate some rack units with my pedalboard.....where to start... basically what i found was modualation effects work best in a loop set for series..i don't have loops on the amps but i was looping a rotary speaker rack unit through a pod XT pro's stereo effect loop, series was recommended by Line 6 and in fairness did seem to work best, something to do with the nature of the time delay modulation effects use and the way a parallel effects loop works by mixing the direct and effected signal can cause problems with the effect.....

where i see your main problem being is the GT-5 ..gain devices like distortion/comp/drive work best in the front end of the amp and the others like delay/mod/verb in the loop..you could try running the GT-5 if it has an amp sim in the return of the loop and plugging the pedals in the front end of the GT-5 or the GT-5's loop if it has one but i don't know what the sound quality would be like...? i gave up on the rack and just use my pedalboard and two amps in stereo off the pedalboard running clean with a good quality tube overdrive and all the rest are Boss compacts(CE-2,DD-3,TR-2 etc) as Rich_S said in another post all the conversion for analogue to digital and back has to affect the tone..i know Line 6 claim that you can plug pedals into the front end of the Pod like a regular amp but i found it did affect my tone..i can't put my finger on how but it did something to it i didn't like....Plastic sounding is the nearest i can describe it.... back to my regular boss pedals and all is well..... of course if your planning on just using the GT-5 for effects and the amps natural distortion it might work ok,just use your compressor on the front end on its own

I'm not saying your problem is unsolvable but it might not be as easy and as compact as you want... i know my head was hurting thinking about it............... best of luck and keep us posted on your progress.....

Thanks, Franzoni! I forgot to mention that I am definitely wanting to use the amp's natural distortion. I hear the gt-5 has an effects loop (send/return) and also a stereo output so you can place some effects in the loop and others in front and make your connections accordingly (making an effects loop with the send/return section and dist/od/comp/wah in front with the in/outputs). It is complicated because I want to be able to use the mod effects and things like the wah and sometimes compressor on the unit (maybe some od's if they are good too sometimes) of the gt-5. I am told that no other gt series unit has the ability to truly run the type of set-up i am talking about in an intuitive way. maybe the gt-10?

***I guess the overall issue I'm facing is that I do not understand the whole set-up process of the GT series units. Is there a way to simply use the effects that should go into an effects loop in the effects loop and the effects that should go in front, in front? I DO NOT want to use the speaker/amp sims on this unit. I just want everything to be placed where it should be. I don't get how the 4 cable method works, and why I can't just go from the effects loop on the GT-5 (or 10) to the effects loop of my amp and from the output of the GT to the input of my amp and just place the effects accordingly on the GT. Or can I?***

So the main questions:

A.) Is it possible to run the effects send/return of the GT-5 or GT-10 into the effects loop of my amp (a VHT 100clx) as I would a normal effects loop?

B.) If I do this, will I be able to use the input/output section of the GT-5 or 10 as if it were a separate loop in front of my amp for distortions/od's/wah/compression? and Finally

C.) will all of this be possible while using the channels of MY amp and not the preamp and speaker sims on the GT-5 or 10?

For anyone who takes the time to derive meaning from this post and answer any of these questions I will be eternally grateful! Thanks again all.

Thanks for the links! I'll be sure to check them out. I just snagged a GT-5 today, I decided that I already own too many stomp boxes to justify dropping $350-$400 on a gt-10, and it seems like the main focus of that thing is the amp models which I have little use for. Now to get down to business:
