Hi! I own a PH-1 - old silverscrew, and it sounds awesome. Its not new, so the light dont light up all the time, only when I step on it - just as it should be. But, its old and have some turns, so I think of replacing it. I also own a PH-2 MIT. I have tryed to tweak it in all ways during a a/b connection, but, the PH-2 is still harsh in its sound.
So, is a PH-1r same same compared to PH-1 with resonanceknob set at minimum? Or is it possible to get that smooth sound from a MIJ PH-2?
Almost forgot, I like the sound from my PH-1 with both knobs right up at 12 o clock. |

| the PH-1r can be very smooth.. I'm not sure if it's the same as a PH-1 when the res. is all the way off - you might find a PH-1 setting somewhere on that knob, though. I find my PH-1 to be very subtle at slow speeds - the PH-1r is much more flexible and present. Both sound great. |

I've owned all of the Boss phasers, and here's my take. YMMV.
PH-1 -- Nice mellow sound. Sort of like a PH-1r with the res down, but not exactly. The PH-1r is still a deeper, more complex sound. It's a subtle difference, but it's there. My problem with the PH-1 was it had way too little headroom for my rig. Sold it.
PH-1r -- Arguably the richest of the Boss phasers but can also be subtle. Has more headroom than the PH-1, but it also gave me an annoying boost in both volume and low end, especially with my bass. Sold it.
PH-2 -- I found this to be the thinnest of the Boss phasers. It's the opposite of the PH-1r in that it cuts both volume and bass when engaged. Otherwise, it's a nice sound in Mode I. Mode II was a little extreme for me. But the tone suck was a deal breaker, so I sold it.
PH-3 -- Surprise, surprise, this little-loved pedal, Boss's first digital phaser, turned out to be my favorite, at least in 10-stage mode. The other modes are lackluster (IMO), though the "step" mode is a cool effect. The 4-, 8-, and 12-stage modes don't do much for me. But the 10-stage mode is my fave of all the Boss phasers. It's clean and clear and watery, and it has tons of headroom. It is not subtle, so if that's what you're after, you might not find it here. Maybe try the 4-stage mode. In any case, in 10-stage mode, there's no loss or gain in EQ or volume when the pedal is engaged. I can't believe I fell in love with a new MIT digital phaser. And the PH-3 is dirt cheap -- usually $45-$50 used.

I can agree that PH-3 is a very nice phaser, I bought it used for a very good price and didnt expect much of it. But its a quite good phaser I think and the extra psychedelic effects are nice to play around with. Of the others I like PH-1 the most and think PH-2 is the worst of them all. I have for years tried to get a sound out of PH-2 that I like, but I cant ..

The PH-1R definitely has the best and most versatile sound IMO. What it lacks is an "effect level" control - so it can be overwhelming. I'm just building a "looper/mixer" to tame mine: http://www.bossarea.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=5002
An LS-2 can also be used with careful wiring.
I've never been able to get a sound even close to as lush out of either of my PH-2 pedals (MIT and MIJ). THe PH-3 is "nice" but really bland compared to the PH-1/PH-1R.

| Ok, thanks guys. I think that I have to stick with another PH-1 and modify one of them so that the led will shine all time when pedal is on and maybe change the switch. |

Bit of a late reply to this post but I have today had the chance to try both together, the PH-1 and the PH-1r that is. My conclusion with the pedals I tried is that that with the PH-1r resonance off they were as near identical as I couldn't tell. Same background noise level as well. I quite liked the effect that the resonance knob offered, a richer more complex phase to my ears. The PH-1 is mine (as of four days ago) but I have yet to persuade my friend to part with his little used 1r although he was surprised at how much they are worth so he may change his mind.
Found a PH-1 resonance mod whilst surfing by the way...

Hi archimedes
Thanks for updating us, on the "DEVICE Mag" link to the Res mod for the PH-1.
They were really great mags, full of really interesting, & useful information.

| the ph-1 and the ph-1r with the resonance turned down do not sound the same. the ph-1r's sweep is at a lower frequency and there is more bass in the tone. |
