| Before I found the used Classic 30, I was going to buy a Blues Jr. new, but the Peavey was a better deal. |

| I had both the Fender BJ and Peavey Classic 30 and wound up selling them both. They are good starter tube amps, but I would aim a little higher like a Fender Deluxe Reverb Reissue or a Silverface Deluxe Reverb. That will keep you covered in the amp department for a while. BTW, 5-6 watts will never hang with a full band. |

I just play at home BigBossMan, so the classic 30 is working out to be ideal for my purposes (and budjet). Which one did you prefer, between the blues jr. and the classic 30? |

| Classic 30 is more versatile than the BJ. I kept the Classic 30 much longer that the BJ. |

Well, looks like my (first) tube amp has been chosen for me, but that's ok - it's free! I get it tomorrow. A friend/ co-worker is offering it to me. Don;t know much about it except it's called a Lero and it goes way back. It uses (getting into my real newB territory here) 12ax7's and 6v6's(?). He said it sounds pretty good but it does need a speaker and it's looking pretty rough. I thought that if I like the sound of it I would build a new cabinet for it so: Advice on the speaker? Construction of the cab? |

The impedence of the speaker is the important thing, you must run the proper load, ie. You can't run a 4 ohm speaker in an amp designed for 16 ohms. I just ordered this today, loaded with a 16 ohm celestion vintage 30.

when you say it needs a speaker..is the speaker missing or just blown....? if the original speaker is stiil there but damaged it might have a rating on it...or like you said check around the back of the amp for a plate with the spec on it..pedals4pv is right about speaker ohmage especially with valve/tube amps,a mismatch can result in burnt out output trannys, marshalls are prone to this.....but old valve amps can be really good and well built and well worth restoring.....good luck..oh i would built a new cabinet out of 3/4 ply or some old pitch pine if you get it..or you could check out some of the smaller amp builders, they sometimes sell retro fit cabinets for the old fender tweed amps that might work for you....there is a place in germany called www.tubeampdoctor.com that does them ,i'm not 100% but is there a company called ruby tubes in canada that sold a lot of this type of stuff...??..... |

Hi All - thanks for the help so far. I've got my tube amp now and I was given a brand new Celestion G12T-75. Unfortunately, it was 16 ohm and at 75W, just not right for the amp. Today I received a Mojotone MP10-R, so that should do the trick. Of course, that's once I build the new baffle, which will be part of a new combo cabinet and...haven't figured out what size to make it just yet.... |

Glad to hear your nearly up and running with the amp..... ..... pedals4pv....i swear this is true..our drummer is playing music as long as me and we rehearse in his shed, over the years a lot of bands he has played with left bits and pieces of stuff lying around and never came back for them....one of which was a really old P.A cab..you know the type,2x12 like a guitar cab, made out of 3/4 ply...he gave it to me for the marshall head a couple of years ago and like the nutball i am,i never even opened the back of it to see what speakers were in it,assuming they would be el cheapo full range P.A speakers.... so what did i do..?? i ordered two vintage 30's when i was getting some valves off the 'net..... and when i opened the cab to put them in,i found two original 16 ohm greenbacks.... he then proceeded to tell me that a guitar player in a previous band split a marshall 4x12 and used two of these cabs with the speakers instead..so somewhere a old marshall cab is lying around speakerless.. ..and the guitar player is still using the sister cab to mine(although i won't put money on it,if he left this one behind).....at the end of the story the singer chipped in (used to play electric guitar years back)that one of his mates has a marshall cab belonged to him as well from when he was in his first band..... ...although he gave me a early 80's jap DS1 i and an old arion phaser i found on a shelf in his workshop and the drummer gave me a FZ3 and let me keep the cab and speakers even after i told him the greenbacks were worth a few quid.....good mates... ..the greenbacks are in storage until i can build a good, solid open back 2x12 for them..... |
