Well I picked up a Touch Wah TW-1 this week and I've been putting it through its paces... and I love it! I was happy with the price and cleaned it up so its like new and it sounds... fantastic!
This is the first silver screw, skeleton switch pedal I have ever had my hands on, and since falling in love with Boss pedals and their rich history (I devoured the Boss Book a little while back) I'm just so stoked to have such an early pedal at last (though I do have a CE-1 too). I think the serial puts it from around early 1979, oh and its the early "Touch Wah" version not the "T Wah" version.
These are still reasonably cheap here and there, and I don't believe the actual circuit design or components vary between the different releases, so I recommend picking one up if you can. As the name suggests the "touch" means the auto-filter reacts to picking dynamics so you can set it up real nice to work with your guitar's volume and your hands. You can get a funky, heavily affected sound, or a real subtle effect that sounds great depending on how hard you dig-in. I love a subtle sound just to liven things up a little... it sounds almost... mysterious... when set like that. Just gives your tone a little bit of movement and it's gorgeous! |

Hey Fylthy, congratz on the purchase!!
I had the same experience - the TW-1 was my first SS pedal and I've been in love with them ever since.. I always try to find an excuse to include it in a pedal chain.
I actually just grabbed another one.. #7600 on ebay. It's becoming a sub-collection.. I find T-wahs harder to find locally than the "touch". The circuit doesn't change, at least into the 200xxx range (I believe) but the earliest examples feature the Raytheon 3403 IC, later changed to a pair of 4558s. The Raytheons were phased out, starting from around #8600, in favour of Japanese-made chips. Some players/collectors favour the Raytheon chips, however...

| Cool man! Thanks for the info. The serial on mine is 8100 so I guess thats around the same time. The only niggle I have is that though its quiet in bypass, when engaged its probably the noisiest pedal I have... but then again it is very, very old... maybe some caps dried out I guess. Nothing a noise gate can't sort out. |
