I have an old boss octaver (~1983) and boss delay (~1981) that I would like to not have to sink battery after battery into. I've been looking around these forums, and I've gathered that I would have to daisy chain them to get them to work properly. That's all well and good, but I've tried them both individually with a 9v adapter and they worked fine. The lights on both of them lit up fine and they sounded as they should. The adapter is from an electronic drum kit.
Can anyone explain why they work? Would it be damaging to the pedals to keep using it?
It says Input: 120V~ 60Hz 0.15A Output: 9V~ 850mA on the back of the adapter if that matters.
The adapter is almost certainly unregulated, so will probably be up around 12V with the very light power load from the pedals. 12V is what they need, so that might be OK.
There is no way to tell if there is a possibility of long term damage without more info. We would need to know what the actual voltage is going into the pedals - measured with a good meter.
The best way to power these pedals is with a genuine Boss ACA adapter, or add a PSA pedal to the pedal chain and power the lot with a PSA adapter and a power daisychain.
