What about the quality control issues? There's a brand new Fender stratocaster at the music store and the finish is terrible it hasn't even left the store and the paint is all cracked and faded. They even had to put it in the showcase to keep it from getting damaged more I guess. In fact it looks like its 30 years old and no discount either,it's got a huge price tag.I was shocked. And they sure seem to sell a lot of stratocaster pickups, the Gibson ones usually last the life of the guitar, are they fragile or something?

Please...When I popped the question to my then GF she went out and bought me a new es-355. The finish was sloppy and so were a number of other things. This is on a $3000+ guitar. I can see on a MIM or even a MIJ Fender that there are issues but I would guess that there is less of that on the Custom Shop stuff. Also, there are a lot of crappy music stores out there so factor that into account. I'm not defending Fender, I don't even play their gtrs (see below) although I do play thru a '69 twin.

My $0.02 on this topic: G&L Legacy Special, Leo's last version of the strat and all you'll ever need - #1 in my book. funk, jazz box, country, rock, metal - bring it on.....

i have a yamaha sg2000s...basically yamahas take on a les paul with a sg shape thrown in and it's all original from the 80's(nippon gakki factory japan) with the original case and there is no and i mean no quality issues with this guitar..i can see why this made gibson very nervous at the time.... this is my go to guitar when i feel a robben ford moment coming on...............

pedals for pv......i had lend of a gallagher strat for a while i have a post somewhere about it.... to be honest 'bro (and i'm a diehard fender man) i don't think it's worth the money there looking for it..if you pick up a mid 80's american standard strat(i have one) the quality is really good compared to the newer ones..i personally believe that after workers bought out fender from cbs the quality shot up for a few years...if i ever have a bit of spare cash(very tough these days with three young kids...)and i see any in the secondhand ad's i'm going to snap them up....the same with the jap strats nd teles from the same era........i also had a go of a deluxe model strat 2005 and i have to say it didn't do it for me at all..i'm very fussy about rosewood necked strats and the fingerboard on this model was way to light and dry...and this guitar in ireland is about 1300/1400 euro new...????..........poor show from fender....

Japanese strats are harder to come by in North America. We get the mexican ones here or Korean or of course the american ones at double the price. I think the relics look cool but no way can I justify paying that much more for a guitar that looks all beat up,I sort of makes me think of stone washed jeans or stick on tattoos. Beside I have too many guitars as it is.

When I'm broke there's good deals on gear everywhere I look, and when I have a little to spend its squire, epiphone and behringer, all priced by a lunatic A good MIJ strat can fetch 700 here.

I've began with a Westone Les Paul replica (1980) and I ever had the humbucker in my guitars (Ibanez Destroyer, JEM777 FP, etc.) I've bought also a Stratocaster Japan in 1986 but in that period I was deep in the heavy metal and the single coils didn't satisfy me so I've sold it (sucker, nowadays a Japan of 1986 is gold in ebay!) to buy the Fender Katana (), 1992 a Cort Steinberger replica with two Di Marzio, in 1994 I've bought a L.P. Standard and became my prefered guitar, in 2004 I needed of the sound of a Strato so I've bought it, but immediately I removed the bridge p.u. to put the Li'l Screamin' Demon SLSD-1 (by Seymour Duncan) with a switch to turn back in the single coil sound.

To be honest I used both guitars (Les Paul & Strat) and I don't know which one is the best: there are moments that I prefer to play one or the other, but also there are songs that it's preferable to play with one instead the other... an Hamletic's doubt!

personally, the best guitars I've ever played were all Fenders. (I do have a "Less" Paul, but of course it's not an apples-to-apples comparison.)

however, if someone would like to purchase a Gibson Les Paul and donate it to me, I might be willing to change my mind. (specifically, I'd like a Les Paul Standard in ebony, with a '60s neck and chrome-covered humbuckers, please. and I guess while I'm at it, I'll wish for peace on earth, especially in the Middle East, and good will to all....)

I think anyone with 2+ guitars would agree that this one is the best for this song, that one for that song, & the other for the little fill just before the third chorus

redundant@ eheheheh it's true. My wife says the same thing when I buy a new guitar and/or effect!

I like to have more guitars as possible. Otherway, we think that the women prepare herselves (dress, makeup, hair style and so on...) for the pleasure of the men? BIIIP WRONG!!! They done this sort of auto-torture for the other women for a sort of rivality. The same way the men musicians that shows the best guitar(s) as possible on this percentage:

- 1% for the brand
- 1% for the playability
- 1% because the XYZ artist own the same model of instrument we think that - for a sort of an ancestral ritual - we can play as him
- 97% for the envy of the others musicians! ;)

Hi Fabius & Guys

I think you forgot to factor in the color, somewhere in your equation.

Hard to say, 'cause we go to the shop with an idea of guitar, but there are many factors that could be interfering with our purchase, it depends on how we are determinated to find the exact guitar we wish:

- there's is the exact colour we want in the shop?

- there's another colour that attracts more than the colour we wanted before?

- could it be quite another model of guitar...

In another post I've wrote about the purchase of my Fender: I've started with at least 3 colours in mind and an exact model and at the end to have every way a Fender I've pleased with another different colour instead one of the three!

I'm starting to get too cynical about this...one half of me is saying....why is it bad for a fan to want a replica of their favourite artists main axe..?? but to start cashing in on people like joe strummer.... i was reading an article with mick jones also of the clash in the sunday times and his new band ...carbon/silicon....(with tony james another famous 70's punkateer) and they were giving their music away for free on their website... to me that is more in the spirit of joe strummer and people like him....shame on fender.... this is anti everything that joe and the rest of the punk movement stood for.....

Im with you on this Franzoni!
Fender and other big manufacturers Were only in it for the money, this is the title of a 60s Zappa/Mothers album too. We all know this is true of course but the tendency is to forget it, even Leo Fender was in it for the money.
There are of course people out there who build great guitars just for fun, pride or something like that. And we should buy from them more than from the Big Names. We usually get a lot more quality guitar per $ from those builders. You know, the Fender or Gibson trademark is expensive.

As mad and upset as some people seem to be at Fender for trying to cash in on Joe Strummers name, I think that Fender could only be allowed to do that if they were given permission to do so by the estate of, or whoever has the rights to, Joe Strummers name and music. Otherwise, if Fender didn't need permission to do a Joe Strummer guitar, then Fender could be making a Hendrix and Roy Buchanon signature guitars, and 'signature' guitars for anyone else who played a Fender if they did not need permission from the player or the estate of a performer who has passed away.

I don't say shame on Fender, I say shame on whoever is in charge of Joe Strummer's estate, as I believe they are the ones that had to give the final green light on anything involving Joe Strummer and his name. The people in charge of Joe Strummers estate who OK'd this product to be produced are the ones who have forgotten what Joe Strummer and the Clash stood for! Or at least thats my opinion on the matter....

but figure who is going to buy a Strummer guitar - it certainly won't be any of the punk old guard, it will be some young wannabe

as for who ok'ed the deal, got to be his wife & kids - need the cash?
