Hi Everyone -
I'm new to this site but not new to Boss Pedals. I picked up a very interesting pedal a while ago. Has anyone ever seen one like this? Unfortunately, it is missing the label on the back so it makes its more of a mystery. The housing is made out of plastic and its slightly larger in size than standard Boss pedals. I believe it to be a legit Boss pedal, as the PC board has DS-1 silkscreened on it and it has the same knobs that Roland used on their Rocker Distortion Pedal and early large sized delay unit.

I'm guess'n its from the late 70's/early 80's.n It has a SIP IC also so that would put it around that time. I wonder if Roland tried making them cheaper - kinda like how MXR went to plastic housing before they went under.
Anyway, let me know what ya'll think.
Btw, I added a spring and plastc screw as it was missing those when I got it.
Sounds similar to the rocker distortion pedal - more metallic and fuzzy.
Cheers,
Kf

Here's more pics -

Yeah, you're right - PSK is silkscreened on the pc board right next to DS-1. Whats the deal with them - werer they making knockoffs?
I had asked a friend who turned me onto this site to post pictures of it for me - I was under the impresstion he hadn't yet.
I took the knobs off yesterday to clean it and I could tell they hadnt been off before as they were very tight. I believe them to be original to the pedal.
Thanks,
Kf

Hey - I didnt scroll down enough on the link to see the pic. Yeah, thats what it is. Still wierd about the knobs - wonder if they used the same ones?
Anyway, mystery solved.
Thanks!

| Wow, is that ever close to a real MIJ DS-1 pedal, a lot of resistor values match. How many pins does the IC have, your pics only show six |

The IC has 7 pins. Its a SIP(single in-line package) which predates DIP IC's. I can't find any part numbers on the IC.
Btw, the pedal is up for sale. Anyone interested, can email me their offer.
Thanks!

These are so close to the original that it wont surprise me if PSK ripped of the schematic and made the circuit identical too. It looks incredibly similar when you look at the component layout.
Do you know which opamp it's using? The Boss DS-1 was using a TA7136P. |

PSKs are KOREAN made BOSS knockoffs. They sell a lot of these here in the Philippines back in the early 90s. They were a bit bigger than BOSS pedals. Right now there's CHINA made BOSS knockoffs. Here in my country they carry the BOSTON ENGINEERING brand.
I will post a picture of it asap. |

Here's some pics of the BOSS clone i'm talking about.
A metal zone clone.

The enclosure is made out of the same material used on todays Boss pedals.

Thanks for the Boston Engineering pics. These are sold in the UK under the name GLX. The Boss-hog thing is just something the seller has come up with as an excuse to but Boss in the auction title.

Actually,i got this used for 1000 pesos, about $11 bucks. It has tons of gain bit it doesen't sound like an MT2. It's not "NASAL" sounding. I got this so that i could practice doing mods. I wouldn't do that to a BOSS. Esp if yuo're a noob on modding like me. |

| i saw a similar psk pedal in a department store before here in the Philippines too. the boss clones now available here, sold under the brands glx and boston engineering are just look-alikes, not sound alikes. i bought the od 100 thinking it sounded like an od-3 or an sd-1. but it sounded closer to my boss hm-2. i'm using the od100 now to practice my modding skills. i've change the jrc4560 opamp to a stacked 4558 which made it sound like a ds-1 with a bass boost. i removed 2 diodes and i think its closer now to an od. i'll remove a couple more diodes since i think its "overclipped." |
