I bought my 1st guitar in '83.. a Harmony model #H666 Flying-V from JCPenney for $100. Throughout my college years, I added a momentary kill-switch, a phase switch with a bi-color LED, a switched output jack for the battery, & other minor mods.
I finally took it off my dusty wall & took it into my luthier for a fret job & commissioned him for some additional work. After working over the fretboard, he'll gut the stock electronics & replace all with Switchcraft, Alpha pots, & fresh wiring.
Then he'll add some Sperzel Trim-Lok tuners, Seymour Duncan P-Rail p'ups, Schaller fine-tuning tailpiece, & an N-Tune onboard tuner. Along of course with fresh intonation.
It may be a month or so but I can't wait to get it back. Normally, I'd do the work myself but its in for the frets anyway so...

Pics to come... |

The P-90 sounds awesome... & it has been said that SD nailed it.
Great video Nice sounds too, but by far the ugliest p'up I've ever seen.

I have schallers and sperzels on two of my guitars..much prefer the schallers for tuning stability..i have the sperzels on the tele and to be honest DeFrag i'm not to mad about them..only reason i haven't bothered putting on some original fenders i have... is the back pickup is busted on the tele and i don't use it much at the moment for gigs.....i've used schallers on my main strat for at least 15 years and find them excellent for tuning stability even with new strings it doesn't take things long to settle down.... |

Franzoni: I see Schaller has some "Top-locking" tuners that doesn't have the knurled knob at the bottom they say you just thread the string through & it self locks. Do you have these & if so, can you elaborate on their operation? Thanks.
Schaller makes great stuff. |

No mine have a small black knurled top you tighten as you pull the string tight...pull the string through the little hole as normal and just tighten the kurled top down to lock...most important no wraps or slack on the string...it's not that i don't like the sperzels, appearance wise they look a bit better because the locking part is on the back out of sight but for tuning stability i found the schallers to be better and these are on a strat with a whammy bar that gets used..... i thought the sperzels would of been at least stable on a fixed bridge like a tele(i put them on because i like to do some behind the nut bending on the tele and strat)...i think PRS use something similar to mine that toplock on their guitars with a small slot than you tighten using a coin...actually mine must be more than 15 years old because they say .. Made in W.Germany on them....so pre 1990.... ... i'm gettin' old bro'...... ......... |

I'm interested in hear your opinions on the p-rails as well.
I have a sweet washburn wp-80 whose PU's are kid of weak...I was looking at Lollar low-wind Imperials (more vintage sound) or these. Two totally different directions.
Let us know. |

I picked up the V today & she went from a $25 guitar to over $700 in parts & labor. The action is to die for with a new LCR (Level, Crown, Redress), carved bone nut, fresh strings, & intonation.
All the work plus the parts I chose really brought this guitar back to life & I'm very glad I went through with the project. I'll put her through the paces this weekend but I can tell I'm going to terrace these frets by playing this guitar often during the next few years.
The P-Rails sound awesome but on the other hand, the only thing wrong that I can see is the N-Tune display is hard to view over the bridge without tilting the guitar up a bit. Ah well, its a good thing looks don't count that much considering I've relic'ed this thing over the years & it shows battle scarring of past mods! I figure... the unplugged screw holes let the tone "breathe". |

Unfortunately I took it into the luth on a spur of the moment & didn't get any before pics. I'll take some after shots though. Its looking a bit eclectic now. |
