I used to feel the same way about DOD pedals -- for a USA product, the build quality of the 'stomp' switch, the odd 10V DC 1/8" AC jack, and the detachable battery cover were astoundingly horrid design flaws*, IMHO. however, some of those old DOD pedals (Grunge, Death Metal) make a wonderfully obnoxious sound. (I'm not sure how useful these sounds are, though.)

let me start by saying that i love pedals. especially boss. im up to a count of 16 bossers. if there is a pedal that i dont really like, i will try very hard to find something that i like about it.
boss xt-2...i just picked this baby up. honestly, the only thing i like about this pedal is the color. i hate the tone, its too trebly, the sustain sucks, and its too noisy even for a distortion pedal. its the first time i was ever dissapointed with a boss pedal. this is definately my worst boss buy. |

boss wise, definetely the syb-3.ordered it thinking I was buying something I could use with bass guitar...I ended up with a 150 auto wah..(and my FT-2 did that better too)
speaking of which..Dod envelope filter...sucked out all the volume and tone..absolutely useless. |

I guess I may be one of the few that actually liked the DOD Classic Fuzz, but then again, its been years since I've played through mine.
The worst pedal I ever considered buying, until I tried it, was the old DOD Buzz Box. If I recall correctly, its based off the MXR Blue Box. Anyways, I was the first one to try it out in the store after they got them, and the people working at the store first thought the pedal was broken because it basically sounded like someone playing through an amp with a shredded speaker cone and a shorting out guitar cable. I should have bought it though, as I hear they are now pretty pricey at times on eBay, and I can really use some extra cash these days. |

Arion Metal Master, Tinny buzz like sound, the tone pots might as well been on/off switches and the distortion control didn't fair much better. HORRIBLE!! . In my defence it was my first pedal though. |

| Just a note about the DOD Classic Fuzz, the guitarist (Rob I think?) from the 10,000 Maniacs used one. |

really? I'm trying to think of a 10,000 Maniacs song with a distorted guitar part... not to second-guess you or anything, though.
when I think of fuzztone, I think of really harsh squared-off distortion, with plenty of grit. does the DOD Classic Fuzz function more as a boost? |

| From what I have seen on guitargeek.com, Dingus is right, the guitarist from 10,000 Maniacs uses a Classic Fuzz. From my experience with it, at low settings it could be used as a boost. The reason why I liked the pedal is because with the set up I was using at the time, I could get a decent crunch out of it, but yet there was still note clarity and definition. I liked it because it seemed to have better definition and clarity compared to other distortions I came across at the time, chords had a nice sustain, and single notes had clarity while being distorted, and it sounded like more natural of a distortion to me. Like I said though, I haven't played around with it much lately, so I need to run it through my current amp and guitar setup to see if I still like it. |

thanks for the explanation, Jack!
I wonder if the DOD Classic Fuzz and the Boss FZ-2 (which also has a clean boost mode) influenced each other at all (e.g., one was made first, then the other company made their own similar pedal with similar functions)... |

Boss:
AW-2. It did not sound good with my setup and it sucked tone worse than any other Boss pedals that I have. Incidently, that one was the last time I bought a brand new Boss pedal. The T-wah is better.
Non-Boss:
Two of my vintage EH pedals are horrible: The Big Muff and the Poly Chorus. They are probably lemons, as they both need fixing every once in a while since day one. I could deal with the Big Muff circuit myself, but the Poly Chorus circuit is out of my league. I have lost count on how much money I have spent on repairing this thing over the years. Out of the EH pedals that I have, I always thought the 16-second Delay would be the first one to break (complicated circuit with slider controls on the panel), yet it has never gone out of order after all these years. |

| EH/Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail. Noisy as hell. Nothing holy about them. And I've tried a few. |
