Most of us think the tele neck pickup is too dark or muddy. One solution is to remove the cover of the pickup, another is to bypass the tone control when the neck pickup is engaged. See schematic below
Its in Swedish, hals is neck, stall is bridge.

Never tried pulling the cover off the neck pickup...have you tried this Goran and does it make a lot of difference..?..i know people used to do it with gibson humbuckers but i thought it was more to do with volume and to get the pickup to sound a bit hotter to drive the amp harder....the both SD pickups i have in the tele are a bit dark sounding what i did was to put 1 meg pots in,i got the idea from a post by Dr Bob about the pots in his Tele after some reading on the net i found Fender put them into some of their teles at the end of the 60's and some people claim this is part of the famous Bakersfield country sound, and as you know i also experimented with the wiring options finally wiring the hotrails in the back in parallel rather than in series..i sort of like the fat sound out of the vintage stack in the neck position it's good for jazzy things so i left it in series...also the last gig i did with the tele i just turned the treble up and lower the bass on the amp a bit to compensate but then Musicman amps are bright sounding amps in general..not suprising really since the were designed and built by the great Leo....
thanks for the wiring diagram .... how is the Ikea Tele sounding these days..?............. |

Me too. I stuck a humbucker in the bridge of mine, and kept the neck pickup. Still can't solder, so it doesn't really work. Also I didn't use logorythmic pots for the two tones I added, and I don't like them. Will have to change that. |

Yes I have removed the cover from a couple of tele pickups, it makes quite a difference, and looks cool too This operation has do be done with care, its easy to hurt the windings. The best tele neck picup I ever used, and its still on my Squier Obey tele, is a Tonerider City limits bridge pickup, a quite hot strat pickup. It complements the bridge PAF clone very well and is not muddy at all. |
