Hi guys . . . i have a question for all you Boss Fanatics !!!
Why has Boss not made my DREAM dirt box yet ? Look, i even gave it a name allready and i know 100% what i want !
It should be MORE "West" than the MD-2 & MORE "South" than the SD-1, if we go with their tone chart !!! A Naturally-Rough tone !
See my chat :

PLEASE BOSS Co. make this pedal for us WITHOUT FAIL
Thanx

Hi SlowGroove and welcome to the forum.
If they made it, I think the HD-1 would be something very different. |

Maybe it's technically quite difficult to make a "rough" AND "natural" distortion... (maybe 'rough' distortion can't be achived by 'natural' methods) There doesn't appear to be a wholly "metallic" AND "smooth" distortion in the boss range either...
In either case it would be very interesting to hear the effect achieved. Does anyone know of any other pedals that might be considered to fit into the areas of the chart that aren't populated by Boss pedals? |

Yeah, `rough` and `natural` together made me think of a rocky wooden sound if that makes any sense. |

You know that chart is missing a good deal of OD/dist from Boss. maybe they already had made it and it is discontinued.
XT-2 PW-2 MZ-2 DF-2 OD-2 OD-1 HM-2 HM-3 SD-2 crunch SD-2 lead FZ-2 FZ-3
Not to mention the three newest: DN-2 ML-2 FZ-5
Any one of those could already be your pedal. |

| We should collaberate and make up a full overdrive/distortion chart |

Thanks for the chart, that's really helpful. I have a modified OD-3 and am definitely into the smooth / natural zone, I guess what I am really looking for (and getting to a pretty good degree with the OD-3) is that smooth valve overdrive.
Can anyone comment on the difference between this and the SD-1?
SD-1s seem to be available pretty cheap and I might be inclined to try one. |

It would depend on what the mod did to your OD-3, but the SD-1 sounds a bit smoother/ softer than the OD-3. I hope that agrees with the chart! I don't know why people mod the SD-1. It is fantastic stock. I have both and it's not a double up, the flavours are different.
By the way, some people say the SD-1 is like a Tube Screamer, which must mean the circuit, even though they clip differently. I tried it side-by-side with the Ibanez TS9 and it has a different flavour again. The SD-1 sits midway between the OD-3 and the TS-9 IMO, with the TS-9 being the smoothest and maybe a little less interesting than the SD-1. Anyway, can't go wrong with it, SD-1 is great.
I'd like to hear what the HD-1 sounds like too. |

That's what i've always thought, but have never been game to say! I have a few flavours of the TS that I've found cheap including the TS808 reissue, and frankly they sound completely boring to my ear.

It is great to see that some of us ask for the impossible:
A naturally rough tone.
What is that? The sound of an amp being overdriven on its own? Hardclipping?, softclipping?
Distortion and Overdrive comes in many flavours and none of them sound the same. Why would someone want any more when there is already so much to choose from.
Boss does have many many different flavours in its range, add to that all the other pedals and effects that exhist today and add all the amps with their own unique tones--vintage and modern--
Really for a player to decide on what tone to use is a hell of a choise today. At times it may be best to go into your studio with just a limited set-up and create whatever comes out. Once you have created you sonic palette you can go and change forever during mix-down.
I think Jeff Beck would still be mixing Blow to Blow--which is from 1975-- if he had time. Luckly he went on to create a heap more albums and tones.
I know we are all different here, but it seems that there are a lot of people out there who just wonder and dream without being to concerned out the practical issues!!
Enjoy and PLAY!! |
