| I just got a soldering iron for Christmas, and want to learn how to mod and design circuits of my pedals and amps. I have an OS-2 that I wanna turn into an SD-1 (i'd disconnect the color control completely), so how should I go about doing that? Any special info i'll need, any tips are greatly appreciated. Happy Holidays, everyone! |

Secretly, every pedal wants to be a SD1. You'd have to change alot of the comps to make it true SD1, but you can change a few to emulate the SD1's frequencies. This way, you retain the larger gain of the OS2, but have the tube sound if the SD1. I'd leave the Color alone, just roll it over to the OD side.
OD2 > SD1 C23 2.2uf C27 .022uf(.018) C4 0.0082uf remove C26 (optional)
Tone R1 470ohms C1 0.027uf C6 0.01uf
Good luck, let me know how it turns out |

| I'd still like to have something close to the SD-1's range of gain, though. |

You want less gain??? Theres some crazy equation to figure out the gain involving the pot and the two resistors. The SD1 has more gain than the TS pedals, but the OS2 has more than both. Since the OS2 was designed to be a low range overdrive cutting off at 338Hz, and the distortion covers the rest. The SD1 cuts off at 720Hz, and has another low cut to give it that imfamous mid hump. You would have to change the Drive pot to 1M, and R37,R39 n C23 to SD1 values. Might be easier in the end to trade your OS2 in the local ads and get a real SD1 |

Looked at the Internal Pics thread (pg6) and the solder side of the OS2 is missing.
Follow the tracks and see if anything is bridging. What did you change? |

i changed everything ChristoMephisto reccomended except C1 and C4.
I have a solder sucker and have removed a lot of the solder in the areas near C23, but there's still some stuff bridging over and i dont know how to get this thin layer off. |

Hi plexi1959 Go to your local electronics supplier, & ask for a product called desoldering braid, sometime sold as solderwick, chemwick, other names.
It's a finely woven copper braid, like you find on the shield of guitar cables. It's impregnated with rosin flux, & acts like blotting paper, when applied to the solder area, & heated with a clean tip on your soldering iron.
If you look around, there are many example on the web. IN NO SPECIFIC ORDER: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062744 http://www.absolutesci.com/shopexd.asp?id=22006 http://www.easybraidco.com/quick_braid.htm
There are also video example on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieoM_40nRVs&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r___O5AejTE&feature=related http://www.ehow.com/video_4435740_use-solder-wick-remove-solder.html
I hope this helps?
Regards Dr. Bob |
