Hi Guys I like the following heavy distortion pedals: HM-2 HM-3 MT-2 MZ-2
and a SD-1 or DS-2 driving a HM-2 or HM-3
You will sometimes need a grapic EQ after the dual pedals
A DS-1 cranked into an already cranked valve amp is good as well But the valve amp has to be in output valve saturation-distortion And that can be REALLY WAY TO LOUD for some indoor gigs.
Regards Dr. Bob

This is a question that interests me too, I was never able to get a 'heavy rock' sound with my HM-2, it was more suited to extreme music (Metal I suppose ). My guess would be a DS-1, though not owning one it is just a guess. Isn't the Van Halen tone more down to his Amp, his special-wound pickup and an MXR EQ though? I'm not sure he even used a fuzzpedal, though there are many sites which go into his gear setup in excruciating detail. Best 'soundalike' I heard is a guy on Youtube who just plays straight into a 5150 amp. |

| The MD-2 is decent, chuggy and tight, don't be put off by Boss' Nu-Metal marketing. |

| Alternatively, find your own sound rather than splitting hairs trying to nail Van Halen. |

i agree with Tomwest's post. the MD-2 is regarded as "nu metal" for some reason. but its just actually a killer distortion
and about trying to nail that EVH sound, i think one big secret is putting a flanger set on "light flange" BEFORE your distortion. it gives it a hint of flange but doesnt take over. on the other hand, copying EVH isnt cool either.. just ask George Lynch |

I just said "VAn Halen" for you guys to have a reference in the kind of sound I'm after... but I don't exactly would try to copy it, I also lick Mick Mars's tone from Motley cre, I think it one of the best 80's tone. I really like Skid Row too, their guitars sounded excellent... since I'm in a cover band, sometimes there're gigs that I play Rolling Stones, or another classic rock or hard rock, that my current setup provides very well.. But when I need to play some Van Halen, and then some Ozzy/Sabbath, I feel I need a harder sound, and that's what I'm after... MY harder sound, not necesarily other guys's sound... So it looks like the MD-2 is a very good candidate, right? I have always wondered why does that pedal has 2 gain knobs, but no footswitch jack to change between gains... or do they work like cascading gains? |

ya they work with each other. but they both kinda sound the same. if you have one cranked and then you crank the other, it sounds the same but there is just more feedback. i only use Gain 1 |

Hi Guys As far as getting-nailing that EVH sound. I seem to remember reading a Tech article about the 5150 amps he uses-used. They have an extra 12AX7 stage in the pre-amp, to get massive amounts of gain & overdrive. Also, The 12AX7 was selected to be a Very low noise, highest gain type.
So it would appear that his sound does heavily rely on his valve amps.
it's just my 2 cents worth ...

i know midibuddy was only giving van as van halen as a example....but on this i think dr bob is on the right track....that sort of sound relies heavily on the amp...in the early days van halen used a marshall with a variac to mess with the voltage to the amp to make the valves run hotter, the head was used as a pre amp the speaker output went to a attenuator then to the effects ie phaser, flanger etc then back to a couple of HH(OLD SOLID STATE POWER AMPS...SHOCK HORROR......!!!)and finally to the 4x12 cabs....but he was always messing with gear so its hard to nail down exactly what he always used.... |

| what would you recommend Franzoni? I only need a harder distortion than the DS-1 into the OD-3 can provide.. What pedal would you recommend? A Turbo Distortion is a good option? Maybe a Turbo Distortion + an EQ ? |

a harder distortion than a DS-1 would not be the DS-2 - i see the DS-2 as a different type of distortion. i am thinking an MT-2 as it can do a hard DS-1, but the HM-2 and MD-2 are very good also. The HM-2 would be harder to get than the MD-2 however. that's my input |
