After nearly 20 years of playing with myself, (YES, eyesight is fading) I'm going to sit in with a band tomorrow. Not looking to step on anyone's dick or commit in any way, but go hang out, maybe jam & go from there. I'm a picky prick as far as what I will play and the quality of companions I may play with, so this should be interesting to say the least. Don't know if any of you really care, I might not either for that matter. But I thought it was noteworthy. I'd really like to get back in the mix. When we started the band we laid down a few,not really rules but more of a statement of intent.......
1/ not to focus on only the money even though were a working band...i.e not playing complete dumps where people couldn't care less just for cash.....
( we walked out of a regular gig last night because the new owner is a real muppet he lost his nerve at 9 O'Clock when the pub was a bit quiet and tried to cancel the gig...we drove the van about 400 metres down the road to another pub we play occasionally and asked the owner could we play for free if he threw in the beer...by 10.30 the pub was packed as the mobile phones started going and were back there next friday night..... ...sometimes you have to draw the line and vote with your feet, and when your back is to the wall is when you find out who your really playing music with and who you friends/bandmates really are....needless to say we stuck together as a unit and it was one of the most enjoyable gigs i ever did...these IMHO are the times that either strengthen or destroy bands....)
2/ that if one member had a real problem with something that they wouldn't be forced into doing it.....
3/ to have fun........!!!!
were going on nearly 10 years now and things are getting a bit tight with gigs and one or two people have left over the years due to family/work committments but we have managed to stick pretty much together even though tempers get a bit frayed at times..especially when your out 3 to 4 times a week......to much fun sometimes can get out of hand.... ...... |

Money is shared equally.
All our own songs have joint writing/production credits, even if one of us only contributed for a tiny bit of a song.
Makes life soooo much easier. |

Many thanks to zerksies for putting me in the crosshairs. When I give the signal, I want a clean headshot. No centermass please. Security round is all I need. I appreciate the support and all your insights/experiences. As I planned, I just went and hung out and started my Sunday drinkfest. At one point & time I was handed an American Strat (after commenting on it), but respectfully declined the offer. The band is fairly raw, needs polishing badly, but workable I believe. Funny thing is... they were auditioning a singer yesterday. It was a chick. I tried to nail this gal 20 years ago and got nowhere. I don't think she recognized me. Might, probably will go hang out again this coming weekend & see what happens. I'll keep you posted. Hey zerk! Finger on the trigger buddy!

I think as long as the worst musician (usually me ) doesn't have an ego about their ability then from what I've found people are usually great, since a band effectively moves at the speed of the slowest member.
However, I remember in my mid teens when a few buddies and I wanted to start up a band, we invited a friend along who it turned out only wanted to play green day tracks. I mean, if that's what you're into that's what you're into but to refuse the opportunity to learn something different, well let's just say we never invited him back |

Very true Jay.....as musicians we should be open to all types of music, concentrating on one type limits everyone involved.....at the moment were experimenting with a lot of acoustic stuff and it's getting very interesting as were touching on not only classic stuff like dylan, neil young etc..but touching on some irish trad stuff.... ..... don't worry folks some of my boss pedals are still making it to the gig..... .......... |

Absolutely! worst case scenario you end up playing something you don't like, but it's just another string to your bow so to speak...
Speaking of which boss pedals you're taking, is one of them the AD-3 or AD-5? I remember you saying you saw one for a good price and were thinking of buying it? Other than that you must be taking a TU-2 tuner and OBVIOUSLY the XT-2 xtortion for heavy folk metal ? |

At the moment it's my trusty ol' GE-7 thats my pre-amp..i have the CE-2,DD-3 and my CS-3 for a slight clean boost on a few numbers basically i bring the board but really only use these on the gig..my tuner is my TU-12 fed off the B loop on my LS-2 for silent tuning..
the AD-5 seems to be a bit scarce out there at the minute..the one i was looking at on ebay and it was near the end of the sale...i wanted to do a little bit of research on it first..still keeping my eye out... ..looked like a good box for what it does plus it had footswitchable, built in stereo chorus and digital reverb .....
sorry for the off topic...but some of it it down to my experience in starting a acoustic side to the band so it might be of interest to some of you....and i am looking to buy a boss product even if it's out of production.... .... .....
How is band life treating you T-D...?... .... |
