Hi to everyone!
I just acquired recently this pedal lately and it sure was a good bargain.
Having a BOSS CS-3, AMDEK CMK-100, and now this optical compressor, i'm having a mix and match with my other pedals and can't decide which one to chain in my pedalboard
Anyone using this optical compressor? any thoughts about it?

Hi dfx
FYI - the Boss CS-1 is an Optical Compressor.

I've tried it a few times, and I do like it. It does "subtle" compression very well - i'm not sure if it's a clone of some other classic comp or not... The tone is much more straightforward, in comparison with the CS-1, in which the effect is strong enough to radially shape your sound. I love the super-squashy slow-attack of the CS-1, I'm not sure you'll quite get to that level on the Aphex.
I like the Punch Factory's features though.. DI out, and a hugely variable power input (AC or DC with a big voltage range).

@Dr. Bob:
Thanks for the info.
@verivorax:
You're right in saying its a "subtle" compressor. Its a classic case of a compressor where its a "set it and forget it" and always on. Kinda using it now as a buffer in front of the chain or as a D.I. at the end direct to the mixing board. Thanks!

It is a great compressor, I use it as well. It can give you a good boost to your overal signal. Yes it is subtle but it can also act more agressively.
The not so good points are the in-and outputs and the on/off switch. There are times you may have to stomp a few times to get the pedal to act accordingly. They all seem to behave like that, it is a design-flaw, but heh nothing to be too worried about, just treat it with care and you will be fine!! |
