Gonna TRY to make a second appearance this Saturday, after an indefinite work schedule. We have tons of condensing units to crane 70 + foot up in the air... BIG, we'll see. I have NO IDEA how long this feat may take. We'll be renting the largest crane in town, fully jibbed out. I may be too stressed out after the fact to give 1/2 a flyin rat's ass. Heighths and I ain't the best O pals. Drinky drinky fo sho after the fact. Last weekend I spent 5 hours on a similar rooftop operating a winch. By the end of the day I damn near needed a crowbar to pry the corrugated metal roof out of my ass. I was a bit puckered up.

Nice! I'm finding interesting threads as I go...
I'm 28 and ten years ago was desperate to form a band while in college. All I could find was a keyboardist/saxophonist and a drummer, none of them had equipment so nothing could be done.
Now a friend of a friend formed a band and there I am, second guitarist, main keyboardist (although I can't take that equipment to rehearsals) and second vocalist. whoa! I'm the worst of the five -as they've all played in a band before- but, jaymzHal, I don't think I'm slowing them down, they're good by theirselves and I'm learning a lot from them.

We were going to do a cover of 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds' but the lead guitarist didn't quite like doing it, so we decided not to do it. I think that's what you mean. Now we're doing Police's 'Every breath you take' and sounds good enough to me.
The only downside to it all is that we only can play on sunday morning, and not every week... |

Hi Mansun
Playing with better musicians than yourself is the best way IMHO to becoming a better musician yourself....i know i got a lot of experience in the early days from playing with older guys and 95% of them would be encouraging and helpful.... what i have found is,if the band your in see you trying, and putting the practice in to come up to speed, they have more patience with a person who might not be a experienced as themselves...music should be first and foremost about fun and used as a tool for self expression.....
one of the biggest bones of contention in our band is coming to rehearsal week after week and the same people haven't their 'homework' done..... i'm a firm believer in "fail to prepare...prepare to fail" or as an old guy i played with used to say in rehearsal..."suffer now or suffer later".. i.e. usually in front of a large audience..... i also like a freeform jam on some stuff so it's good to be a little 'loose' in some respects and don't over rehearse as well....but having the 'basics' will help all involved to enjoy a jam even more.....
2/ that if one member had a real problem with something that they wouldn't be forced into doing it.....
This was more about playing certain venues or business dealings to be honest but i see you point and usually if one of us don't really want to play a certain song we will compromise on it as well..but be careful on songs with this as i pointed out at the start of post, this can be abused if one person is lazy and doesn't bother learning his/her part of the song..this is a major bone of contention with us,as singers in particular can be very lazy when it comes to learning the lyrics..... .........

Yes, otherwise you could end up in a situation like me where these gems are unearthed: Me: I'm not who is out of tune, cause I just unplugged from a tuner. Bandmate: Well its not me, cause I tuned up last week, and I locked the Floyd Rose. (after arguing for about 5 minutes over who was in tune, and who was out of tune, I finally just said forget about it, and tuned my guitar to the locked and therefore could never EVER go out of tune guitar).
OR
(after playing the same riff for about an hour) Bandmate: Wow it starts to become natural after you do the same thing over and over again... Me (in my head is thinking): Wow, after 3 years you are just now figuring out why they call it practice, even though I told them 3 years ago how oftentimes at band practice you just have to do the same thing over and over again until you get it right. (apparently they are under the mind set that all the guys from whatever your favorite band is, just got together and started playing whatever album is your favorite by that band, without any sort of writing, arranging, or practicing prior to getting together, and just moments after plugging in their instruments...)

Just one of many crazier than Spinal Tap band moments with these guys... |

hahaha that one was funny.
Our main guitarist says that the three more common lies in musicians are (Translated from spanish): - I'll do it at home - I'll get it done at home - I'll practice it at home
That happens in our band too, but I think that I'm the one who practices most because I feel I need to. And there's always that nasty feeling thru' my head saying 'they'll sack you from the band if you don't improve soon'. Of course I'm overreacting, but I think it's normal to feel that insecure at this initial stage.
Thank you! I feel better reading and writing about this stuff. |
