What is the most beautiful sound/tone escaping from a guitar that you ever heard, with or without stomp boxes? For myself I really like to duplicate the following: Peter Greens tone when he was with John Mayall and Fleetwood Mac Robert Fripp in early King Crimson Neil Young when he is rocking with Crazy Horse And of course Jimi Hendrix and SRV

Nice topic Goran, and I also dig Neil Young and Crazy Horse's guitar tone. Here are some of the guitar tones I like, and some I have tried to imitate. I say imitate cause I usually don't have enough to spend on what they actually use to get those tones. Anyways, here they are: -Matt Pike of Sleep/High On Fire -Fu Manchu from the IN SEARCH OF... album -Josh Homme either with Kyuss (with the exception of the WRETCH album) or Queens of the Stone Age -Blue Cheer's first 2 albums -Ministry's PSALM 69 -Fireball Ministry's THEIR ROCK IS NOT OUR ROCK -Metallica MASTER OF PUPPETS There are other tones I like, but these are the ones that I have either tried to emulate my sound after, or tones that I would like to think I sound like on a good day |

for the life of me, can't figure out how the edge got his shimmering tones on the Joshua Tree Album.
I know that there are 7 techs under the stage for him in concert, and the guy is a tone freak, but ...
FORGET THE LAYERING AND THE DELAY, SEE IF YOU CANT GET that tone folks.
AN EASY ONE IMHO pink floyed solo on "the wall". EVERY DECENT COVER BAND I'VE HEARD GETS THAT CLASSIC SOLO AND THE TONE down. |

Ones that come to mind offhand:
Neil Young on "Powderfinger" (Rust Never Sleeps) Alex Lifeson on "By-Tor And The Snow Dog" (All The World's A Stage), and on all of Rush's Farewell To Kings tour (1977-78) Fast Eddie Clarke on Side Two of Bomber Eric Johnson on "Cliffs Of Dover" (Ah Via Musicom) Angus & Malcolm Young on Let There Be Rock Eddie Van Halen on the first album Robin Trower on Bridge Of Sighs
edit: I knew I'd forget someone -- Brian May, on "Bohemian Rhapsody" and the solo on "We Will Rock You" edit: I also forgot Tony Iommi on Paranoid

| Malcolm and Angus Young on any AC/DC album up to and including Back In Black. The earlier stuff (before Highway To Hell) has a great raw sound - real rock n roll sounding. Highway To Hell and Back in Black have especially nice guitar sounds I think. Just the right amount of gain (or was it pure volume?) and chunky sound. I kind of lost track of them after Back In Black though, so that's why the list ends there. |

my all time favorite tone is George Thorogood. the big hollowbody Gibson and open G tuning both make for a HUGE tone.
others include
At The Gates - Slaughter of the Soul album. - the heaviest guitar sound ever
Metallica - One - actually the whole Justice album, but in "ONE" its the part right before all the open E palm mutes. 4:18 through the song i believe. blows your hair back
and anything by Hendrix, BB King, JLH, and Malmsteen.
i would also like to add that tone is half the player. gear ISNT everything. |

This is really tough... I'm trying to find some more obscure fantastic tones.
Steve Lynch (Autograph) - Turn Up The Radio Pete Lesperance - (Harem Scarem) - Saviors Never Cry Brent Mason (Brent Mason) - Cayman Moon, Hot Wired, and Don't Try This At Home David Bryson (Counting Crows) - Round Here Larry Carlton (Larry Carlton) - On Solid Ground John Jorgenson (Hellecasters) - Passion |

Man, for me, Danny Gatton had the most pure unadulterated tone for what he was playing: nothing but a Tele and a Fender Twin (serial #60!) Nothing sounds good on a Tele anymore after hearing him. He was the master of the Telecaster far beyond Albert Collins.
The new Andy Timmons CD is by far the most breathtaking tone I have heard in 15 years. The Boogie's he uses just drip with tone. |

Masters Of Tone (pretty general, but these guys are the best):
Tuck Andress (Gibson L5, fingerstyle) George Benson (prototype smooth/jazz lead) Stevie Ray Vaughn (prototype power blues) Bela Fleck (pioneer of jazz banjo) Carlos Santana (rock/latin master, "crying" guitar) Stanley Jordan (piano-style guitar on the kneck) Trey Anastasio (custom hollow-body sound) |

I like your choices, JazzManRoper. BTW, a guy I work with is Stanley Jordan's uncle. |

Honestly, I love all of your choices, except Santana. IMO, he has one of the worst sounds on the market today, further marred with predictable whiny "crying" solos. And that's all I've got to say about that.
But everyone else gets two thumbs up, especially Stanley Jordan. What an awesome dude! |
