Hi,

I need a harmonizer pedal. Which one would you choose: HR-2 or PS-5? I only need it to create harmonies in a live set-up. Anyone any experience?

Thanks,
Csaba

I have the HR-2 and it's a fantastic pedal. The harmonies are unmatched by any other Boss pedal and the detune setting produces a great Chorus effect.

Having said that, it was suggested to me that most guitarists only need one voice of harmony. If that is the case with you, you might be better off going for the Super Shifter because the harmonist is only one of many its features. I've also read in the Boss Book that the Flutter setting is the somewhat similar to the VB-2 but someone who has both would have to confirm this!!

I've never tried the HR-2 but I can get some real Brian May like harmonies using the PS-5. It has a lot of things like flutter, t.arm and detune that can be used for unusual effects.

I like the PS-5! the detune mode really makes things sound... well.. evil. Kind of a chorusy evil.

Yeah in terms of what it sounds like, you can get very close to the Thin Lizzy twin guitar solo sound.

Thanks for the responses.
One more question: does anyone know how/where I can get a J-5 Multiple Jack, because it's optianol, but almost necessary for a Boss HR-2. Otherwise I can't use the detector. Or is there something similar that I can you? Can I split my guitar cable with any splitter?

Thanks,
Csaba

Yep, a splitter will work fine! or if you happen to have another boss pedal with 2 outputs (as long as one output is dry, eg a bypass) you can use that. Just as long as the Harmonist gets a totally clean signal going into it.

The J-5 is very hard to come by alrite. There was one on eBay recently but that's the only one I've seen in the last few months. I must say tho, unless ur using really heavy distortion, you don't need to run a clean signal into the detector.

A big mistake I made was running the HR-2 before my BD-2 because I thought it HAD TO have a clean signal. Whatever you do, place the HR-2 after distortion, only then will you get the proper harmonist sound. The tracking might struggle from time to time but even then it still sounds great! By all means get a J-5 if you see one but when I saw that one on eBay I decided I didn't need it.
