hi guys, new to this so sorry if something similar to this has already been asked.

i have a stock sd-1, well its now modded, but for the purpose of this lets say a stock sd-1. i was wondering how different the od-1 is to the sd-1, i know there are numerous versions, and which version would people say is most, erm, 'better'?

cheers, plucker

Hey, hi! Welcome to the Forum!
Both pedals are wonderful pedals! They are different but almost equal at the same time! It´s complicated to explain that for you. All the members here are in love with both pedals.SD-1 has a Tone control and OD-1 doesn´t have. All that I gotta tell ya about their versions is that some sound warm, others are high, some of them have more bass... I´m talking about both pedals.

The best version is the one that sounds perfect to your ears!

You will probably get as many opinions as there are members on the forum.
I don't think there's a huge difference between the OD-1 and the SD-1. The crunch overdrive is quite similar but the OD-1 has a mid boost that the SD-1 doesn't have. Between the different OD-1s I prefer the OD-1D with the 4558 opamp. Must admit I haven't heard the one with the uPC4741C yet though.

Welcome to the forum!!

The SD-1 can be converted to OD-1e specs, but there are a few other differences, technically between the OD1 and SD1.
The OD1 has more of a high pass before the gain, meaning less bass compared to the SD1 (338Hz vs 88Hz). Also has less of a pronounced mid hump, mostly due to the lack of tone pot and how it going into the second half of the opamp
Other than the opamps in the OD and SD, the quad chip versions had larger cap values allowing more of the signal's bass through. Smaller caps makes it smoother and rounded. Not sure if that was to make up for the ic chip, or added to the overall sound of warmth. Theres a few pro pedal modders can do it. But nothing beats the real thing.
Depends on what you got going through it and what you like.
Get a second SD-1 or you'll miss it, heres a similar thread on the topic...

Hi happyplucker

Welcome to the Forum from Australia.

Thanks for your PM (Private Mail), I was about to reply to our mail, & I noticed you had posted the same question here on the forum.

Christo seems to have answered your questions in the his above post.
You can do an ALMOST OD-1 mod to an SD-1, & I believe he added the link to that thread.

Bossarea
, there was also an OD-1 released with another brand of Quad Op-Amp called the RC3404, yes the all these op-amps are variations on the LM741 theme, Even the JRC455*,
some have lower noise figures, & the differing output configurations of the various brands, also probably contributes to how well the device recovers from transients & overloads, when we push the crap out of them.

So happyplucker, get yourself another cheap SD-1 & try the SD-1 to OD-1 mod, it's not to expensive, in some countries.

Don't forget the OD-2 is a very nice pedal as well.

Can I ask what country you are from?
How many Boss or other pedals do you have?

Regards & good luck Dr. Bob

I specifically mentioned the 4741 because I haven't tried it. I was quite disappointed about the 3403 version. I know a lot of people prefer it to the 4558 but I found it thinner sounding with less growl. Doesn't mean I hate, I just like the D version more

cheers for all the replies guys

I must admit, i pretty much liked the prpoerties of the stock sd-1, but i did mess about with it in terms of modding, swapping opamps etc... so i sold that on and am at the stage where i am starting again, hence the interest in all you opinions.

Dr Bob, im from the uk, and gone through quite a few pedals in a few years. i currently own a dm-2, ce-2, modded dd-5, and a reissue tube screamer, of which im not to keen on. ive had a bd-2 in the past which i eneded up modding to monte allums h20 mod.

No ive realised i like that thick, warm blanket that the sd-1 gave me, now im probably gonna source two, and do that 0d-1 mod to it, if it isnt to complex as my technical knowledge is poor ( though i can follow instructions and solder ok).

cheersa for now guys

welcome to the forum..........i have the OD2 and it was my main overdrive for many years,i now use the seymour duncan twin tube classic but i always carry the 0D2 in the guitar case...just in case...... a really underestimated pedal in my view and can still be got fairly cheaply,i saw on in some small ads here in dublin recently for 40 euro.....congrats on the DM-2 BTW.... did you have to sell some of you organs to afford it... i came close to getting one for nearly nothing a while back...a lad i was working with used to play guitar and sax and mentioned he had an old boss delay in the attic,'the old purple one'...a brief haggle later and a price of 80 euro plus some pints was agreed on delivery....when looked for in the attic that night his wife informed him that her nephew had been given all his old stuff a while back...........maybe next time....

believe it or not, i got the dm-2 for just £45, from an acquaintance who needed money whilst at uni. his loss was my gain and i was happy to give him the best £45 pound i ever spent on a pedal. i am in no way dissing the usefullness of digital delays, infact i love their qualities, but for lovely unintrusive short delay, i love it.

trying to source two cheap sd-1's now so i can see about doing some mods. ( though i am in no way a tech head) lol

i also find that the OD-1 and SD-1 are similar, but the OD-1 doesnt have a tone knob.
for some reason the OD-1 seems to have a parameter that the SD-1 cant reach. anyone else notice this?

Hi happyplucker

If you get stuck doing the mod,
You should know by now, that you are ALWAYS welcome to post the pics, here on the forum.
The forum has many more eyes that I do on my own, & there are many people here that are only too willing try to help you.

Christo, has this knack for finding the most minute difference in details.
It was his job once, & still is, I believe.

Plus everyone else will pitch in to help as well.
There is a lot of talent here on the Forum, & unlike some other places, a real willingness to help each other out.

If you need schematics, we will help you out there as well.

You will have more of a chance getting to me here, that in PM.

Regards Dr. Bob
