Best estimate on date is somewhere between 1980 and 1986.
If the drop in volume happens regardless of whether you are using a battery or an adapter and the DS-1 is the only pedal in the chain, your pedal may need servicing. |

| If it's MIJ, it's definitely worth having serviced. I believe you can do a search on the Boss website for authorized service centers near you. |

| If I were you, I'd just hold on to it until you do have the money to sevice it. If it has technical problems, it's not worth much to anyone anyway. |

| can the DS-1 be used as a booster? if it can, my guess is that your amp's volume or gain is too loud for the DS-1... but that's just my guess |

| i wont sell it! like it to much, and i'm kinda afraid, if i turn it in, that they will take some of the distortin or somethin like that away, like stinkfoot's mods.. |

| If you are only getting it serviced (fixed) it won't change the sound of the effect. Personally I'd rather get it fixed by a professional so it is more usable. |

| correct me if i'm wrong, but i was able to use a mit and mij DS1, side by side and i can tell that the level on the mij ds1 ( as well as other mij pedals) are not that powerful compared with their mit counterparts. but if your mij DS1's level has a way weaker, then it really need to be serviced. maybe try to clean the pots using paper and the board using pencil eraser. just be careful though. |

Maybe Stinkfoot can just fix it for you. He could also upgrade the parts but not do any mods to it. You both live in sweden so it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to send it in. Send him an e-mai and ask him if he'll do it. |

Even though a stock DS-1 doesn't have huge amounts of output, it should have no problem reaching unity level into a clean(ish) amp. When feeding (relatively heavily) distorted amps, a distortion pedal can behave in slightly odd and unexpected ways, but into a relatively clean amp it should definitely be loud enough. If not, there might well be something wrong with it.
While I do like turning the DS-1 into a pseudo-overdrive with huge output levels (perfect for scaring the living daylights out of unsuspecting tube amps), I do realize that some people want more distortion. I have been toying around with another mod that would retain more of the distortion in the pedal, but it's not quite finished yet. Some day it will, though, and when that happens I'll post the new mod on my site.

| I recently did a mod like you're describing, stinkfoot. Taking the DS1s distortion down so it's more of an overdrive-type sound. It's amazing how changing a few things can take a pedal into a new area of sounds. |

You got it working again? Good for you! Did you find out what the problem was, or was it one of those mysteries that will remain unsolved?
