I'm not much of a minimalist, I want to have a lot of options available to me. When I took the pix of all my pedals, I gave some thought to this very question. What would I absolutely keep & what would I sell off.
Here's the generic list of must haves in the collection - not necessarily in the chain at once, but available to choose from:
Tier One: Multiple distortion/overdrive sounds - could be pedal or amp. Transparent slow chorus for "pretty" stuff. Fast chorus for leslie stuff. Wide range delay. Tremolo - ideally, smooth & stutter available with wide speed range. Stereo volume pedal. Piezo pickup processor for acoustic sounds. Reverb.
Tier Two: Flanger - I don't have a specific sound in mind yet, so this one's still under investigation. Phaser - Like the flanger, I don't have a real preference developed yet. Harmonist - Haven't used mine much, but I think it will be needed at some point. Guitar synth - for string & keyboard options mostly. EQ will probably make it's way into this list at some point if I can't find the distortion sound I want without it.
So, the list of what I currently have that I want to keep looks like this:
Boss ME-50 Roland GR-20 Fishman Aura Voodoo Labs Tremolo - I have the older 2 knob one which is a GREAT smooth tremolo, but it doesn't do stutter. The new ones might. Boss PH-1 or PH-2 Boss BF-2 I haven't found any chorus that does everything that I want (in case you couldn't tell by the number of them that I have), so right now it would be the Boss CE-2 for slow stuff and the Arion SCH-1 for the leslie stuff, although I like the leslie sim on the ME-50 very much. It's different than a fast chorus, but I like it. Either the Rocktron Deep Blue chorus or the Ibanez RC99 might do as a single chorus, but they both need a tone control to take the bite out if they were going to be good all around performers. Ernie Ball stereo volume pedal (for the Parker Fly).
Bonus features availiable through the ME-50 that pick up a lot of other stuff: The vibrato on the ME-50 does what the CE-1 vibrato can do. It's not the VB-2 vibrato, but I don't know that I'd ever use the VB-2 effect. I really like the sound of the Univibe sim on the ME-50. I don't know if it's close to an original Uni, but it's got a sound that I like a lot. I've got a compressor & noise gate available on the ME-50 if I was inclined to use them. The Hall reverb on the ME-50 is my favorite of the 4 types offered. If I didn't have reverb on my amp, I'd use that. The ME-50's Spring reverb is obnoxious - more like kicking an amp with a spring reverb than playing through it. Lots and lots of delay options, including a rolled off highs "analog" setting that's between the Ibanez AD99 & the Maxon AD900 as far as "warmth" - the AD99 being brighter and the AD900 darker. Volume pedal & wah, plus other crazy expression effects. Plus the modulation & delays can be set with tap tempo. A built in tuner on both the ME-50 and the Aura means I don't need a separate pedal for that.
I really like the clean & overdrive sounds I get from my Ampeg VL-503, but when it comes to a distortion sound, I still haven't found what I'm looking for (as they say). The lead channel of the VL-503 doesn't give me what I want, and I haven't found a pedal into the clean channel that I really LOVE. I remember being amazed at the sound of the Fender Tonemaster with the matching 4X12 cab that I played with briefly one time about 10 years ago. I don't know what I would think of it today, but there's a sound in my mind, at least, that I've never heard since.
Grace and peace,
Steve

Steve, I like your detailed list and the reasons you give for wanting these effects.
Often people mention "I have not found the sound yet I really like", find that intesting as I do not have it myself.
I am happy with Vox, Marshall, Fender and Mesa sounds, and I like it that some of the Boss overdrive and distortionpedals can get you very close to those sounds.
Also: I am a minimalist: I will try by using the smallest amp I have, to create a huge sound. REally like that.
As far as the list goes, I will put for now the LS-2 there, because of its ability to power several other pedals. Not sure which ones I will power up yet, as they change on a dialy basis. One which I seem to use quite frequently is the RV-2...............so there is my list:
LS-2 RV-2 |

visserman,
Wow, that really is a minimalist list. Use an amp with reverb and you've got nothing to power with your LS-2!

my list are:
DD3 (solos just feel naked without this delay. I only use the 400/500ms though)
NS2 (i swear by this one. How many of you can have your 100W hi-gain tube head with max gain and max volume and don't hear anything? well I can with this one. It takes a special connection that is not stated in the manual but my god it works!)
OD3 (never used boost pedals because my amp doesn't need one. but this one is great. the boost is very powerfull although the gain is weaker than a SD1. But it doesn't suck your tone and doesn't take your lows either. actually pretty good. I'm going to keep it)
as for the TU2. well its a nice pedal but if you play with active pickups has I do on most of the guitars (emgs) you will notice an ugly weird boost on the hi-midrange freqs and you lose some ressonance on the lows. I had it for a week then sold it. Maybe I'll pick one again and use it with a truebypass box if I can't find a Korg DT-10. But in the chain it doesn't work for me... |

| Klon, Deja-Vibe, DD-2, '68 Fuzz Face & '61 Fender reverb unit. I know it's not a pedal but I gotta have it. My DD-2 is new to me, it's a keeper. |

I can't live without my custom pedalboard - which pretty much gives me any sound I need.
CS3, MZ2, DC3, RV2, DD3, PH3, NS2, TU12 & PSM5 powered by an off board power supply. |
