Hi guys
Did you all notice that the 4 Telecasters are only strung with 5 Strings
The low "E" is missing.
I heard that this was because Keith does Altered tunings on some of his guitars. (Dropped D or Dropped G)

It was an unsubstantiated rumor for a long time.
But the pictures seems to add truth to the rumor.

Regards Dr. Bob

I don't know how unsubstantiated the rumor was, because I have heard it mentioned quite a few times in various magazines over the years. I think I have what he does do somewhere, but I think he tunes to Open G and without the low E and then sometimes uses a capo.

Yes he tunes in open G or A, removes the E-string as it doesnt sound good together with the other 5. I know thats the case as I play a lot of slide in open A, I have had a couple of 5-strings over the years but I mostly prefer 6-strings for slide work. Its of course very easy to make a 6-string into a 5-string, but Keith has had his nut cut a little different to spread the 5 strings more evenly.
The 5 string method is way better than the 6-string when you play chords/riffs in G or A, like Keith on Honky Tonk Women, Brown sugar and a lot of other songs.
Try it yourself, its of course easy reversible, I promise instant Keith-riffs

this thread reminds me of one of my favorite Keef quotes (unfortunately, this is a paraphrase, from memory):

"all you need to play guitar [like me] is five strings, two fingers, and one a$shole"
