Hi All~

I'm new to the forums, new to guitar and new to effects. In other words - please be gentle with me!
Here goes:
How do I know if a device is analog or digital?
How do I know if they have true bypass, and how do I fix it if they don't?
What's the best way to find out the "market value" of used Boss pedals I want to buy/ sell?
Why is the sky blue?
How do magnets work?
Why does it hurt when I pee?

Cheers,
Brian

Usually, it will say "digital" if it is... :D Actually, that was more than a simple poke - in plenty of cases, it is actually true. The thing is, there are at least two different types of "digital" out there. The traditional way to implement digital fx is to use a digital circuit to create the effect, while keeping everything else analog. This is the way most digital Boss pedals are wired (DD-2/3/5, CH-2 etc). The dry signal path is analog all the way through, the actual delay/chorus or whathaveyou is digitally generated and the mixing (where the two meet) is done in analog fashion.

The other kind of "digital" is where the entire signal is digitized right at the start of the circuit, fx is added and the sum is then converted to analog again right at the end. This gives the circuit far better control over the fx parameters, and makes for a much easier circuit layout. However, it could also be argued that there's no need to digitize the entire signal, if you're only going to add delay/reverb to it... Anyway, this is the way the DD-20 (and possibly the DD-6 as well?) is wired, along with the COSM pedals and newer digital pedals (AW-3 and PH-3, for instance, which btw actually share the same circuit board - they only pop in the correct "brain" into it and wire in the right controls, and it's good to go).

This one's easy - to date, there are no Boss pedals with true bypass. It's not at all easy to modify the compact pedals to TB, due to the construction of the box. The best way to take one out of the chain, if you feel the need to, is probably to use a true bypass loop box. Connect the pedal to its send/return jacks, and use the box to turn the loop on/off.

Searching eBay for completed auctions is a good indicator. Screen out the stupidly high figures and the obvious bargains, and you should see what the nominal going value is. Location will also make a difference - the market value for a used Boss pedal is markedly different in Europe than in the US, for instance.

The other three questions I'll leave for others to answer...

You may want to seek out some sort of balm or ointment perhaps. Of course If you let your lady do the application well then your problem just became a bit easier to deal with now didn't it

Hey folks thanks for the replies.

Stinkfoot: As much as I tried, I still couldnt talk my way out of a poke, eh? First post, first reply, first lineah well, I guess thats initiation! :^). Seriously, though, thanks for the info! I just found it confusing as most Boss stomps say nothing, some are called analog and some are called digital. I guess I was just wondering which the default was, when nothing was indicated.

Dr. Bob excellent answer re: the blue sky!! I am now going to try one of those magnetic bracelets on my pee-pee

Bossarea well, 4 and 5 I knew, but it 6 I was really looking for bravo!

Strato depends on whether its beer or Scotch! :^)

Funken thanks for the tip. We should leave it there tho dont want to be kicked off the forum on my first day!

Pedals you go the head of the class!! Im from the St. Catharines area.

Hi exodia - thanks for the brew - having one now , and more later when my bro comes to jam !!

And thanks for the Guinness, Franzoni (but I've only got Newcastle Brown right now - I know - sacrilege, right?) And for the rest of my international friends, there's Gosser, Beck's, Faxe, and Bud, but you have to get here by 4:00pm!

Nice Night Court reference, Hog - underrated show!

Boss pedals are not true bypass and what needs to be done to them in order to make them true bypass is a bit intensive, and from what I understand, not worth the effort. If true bypass is important to you, then you may want to look into the possibility of either making or buying what is known as a true bypass looper. Basically its a patch bay that allows you to put all your pedals in true bypass loops so the pedals is only in the chain when that loop is activated...
