I thought it was a good book for history reasons, but it was lacking in some areas (i.e the roland/boss section was not too long but the electro-harmonix section was twice as long as the Boss section) I'm looking for other books to read about this subject and would like some ideas of what I should buy. any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.
Arcanon, I have a book by Art Thompson as well, have a feeling it may be a different one than the one you mentioned. It is called something like "Userguide to GuitarGadgets" will check correct title later.
It is a good and informative book in the sense that it educates the reader about effects and explains all the basic effects and their ins and outs, has a basic desicription of their use, history [why these effects were developed in the first place?] and gives a rough guide about how to use them.
This one is also old, early 80s, but it is still relevant for today, given the fact that one is using compact pedals rather than rack-gear or multi-effectors.
The book made me more aware of the underlying priciples of effects: For example Delay: a Chorus, Phaser, Flanger are all Delays but they have their specific settings which makes them good for the sounds they can produce.
Try using a broadrange Delay, and changes are you can create a chorus or some kind of Flanging, okay perhaps not as nice as a specific chorus or Flange but still a good enough sound on its own right.
