I know some bands that have used the Mu-tron to great usage..

Maybe you could share a sample with us...

Well I would love to give you a sample of it but
I dont know how? I love these analog vintage pedals ..these are like a tank ..solid and very warm and creamy like Cherry Garcia Ice cream as it melts...LOL just listen to any recording of Shakedown Street by the Grateful Dead or Estimated Prophet..As well as a bunch of other tunes
it is the same sounding Wah / envelpoe filter.

Jaybird-do you mind me asking what you paid for it and where you got one?

I just picked up a Maxon af-9 (after much research) and then discovered the V. Doh!

Omar Rodriguez Lopez used one while he was in At The Drive-In, and I'm sure it's still in use in The Mars Volta.

off e bay it was $180.00 plus the repairs done at Lsound.com $90.00 so it was not cheap but worth it.

Jaybird thx for the info.

I can't do the HAZ, takes up way too much real estate on the pedal board. I already have an H&K rotosphere that is not coming off the pedal board so there is no room for the Haz.

Thats what drew me to the Maxon AF-9 true bypass and the right size. Also it can be powered by any boss barrel power supply.

Also it has some similarity to the mutron circuit:

"The AF-9 Auto Filter represents the state-of-the art in analog filtering. Like the original Mutron III, the AF-9 uses a CdS Photocoupler (HTV #P873) rather than a VCA at the heart of its circuit. The unique sound of Photocoupler circuitry provides a liquid, shimmering, vowel-like filtering that cannot be produced with other components, giving the AF-9 superior sound quality with lower noise levels than the competition."
