what pedal do you consider beeing the best one for leadboost?

i love the GE-7 for both great rythm sounds and lead sounds..
i'm right now trying to get friendly with my SD-1 that seems to suck all my low end out...

you guys who sais SD-1 is the very best leadboost there is, what settings do you use?

i kind of want most of the distortion tocome from my amps tubes, is that a silly thought?

thats why i generally dont like OD's...

I don't know how you are setting the SD-1, but often times using 2 dirt boxes or when using one as a boost, I find that you need to turn the level up, but the gain, OD, fuzz or distortion knob is barely turned...Also some ODs boost the mids, so it may not necessarily be a volume boost but a frequency boost or fattening...

OD's (especially boss made ones) are generally set up more like tube heads w/ a master volume.

the gain/drive knobs are like input gain and the level knob is like a master volume. for an OD to work as just a boost you'll want to max the level and turn up the gain/drive knob until you get a boost. if that distorts too much it's the wrong pedal. i use my overdrives to get my amp to drive at a lower volume. an OD-1 is a lot more transparent than an SD-1.

you are probably best off using an EQ or compressor as a lead boost or some kind of micro amp that's just a db boost.

i find it's easier to cut without needing a significant volume boost if i just kick on a chorus or something like that.

There are many Boss pedals that can be used as boosters, the best ones in my opinion:
GE-6/7
SD-2 (in crunch mode)
PQ-4
FZ-2 (in boost mode)

Hi Gizzorge

I didn't blow my speakers, but I had just repaired my first FZ-2
NO MANUAL.

So I was testing it in the Lab,
I had the tube amp cranked , then
I stupidly switched it from Fuzz I & II, to boost, without resetting the level control.

Well let me tell you, I NEARLY soiled my pants, it was that Freakin' LOUD.

They should print a warning on the label of this pedal.

"This pedal may make you soil your underware"
When switching into the Boost mode.

heh.

i still remember x-mas day 1994. got a fender stage 112se (160 watt 1x12 combo... heh)an FZ-2, and an HM-3.

i was allowed to crank it loud for 30 mins or so... i remember the first time i set the FZ-2 to boost and hit a chord... it felt like i got punched in the chest from the speaker push and my ears rang for a few days. i was promptly told by my parents to turn it down. luckily that stage 112 had a pretty heavy duty speaker in it :)

No, that was MacAuley Culkin in Michael Jackson's "Black or White" video Too loud? Sure...Eat this!

The GE-7 works a lot better (louder) in the amps FX loop, cause it has a much higher signal to work with.
Also, with the Monte Allums 808 mod the SD-1 doesn't suck out low end anymore, so I like it a lot now.

As for wanting most of your distortion tone coming from the amp is pretty natural, many people prefer an amps crunch over a pedal, and then using an OD to drive it into leadboost/metal territory/just louder/whatever purpose.
It's just that not everyone can afford one, or not everyone can play one at home due to volume levels, etc.

I use a Boss ODB-3 as a boost after my distortion.

I havent found any good pedal (od/ds) that you could use as a boost. But I love to use the GE-6 as a boost.

It works perfectly with both clean and drive channel.. :)
