was wondering if anyone knew of any OC44/CV7003 germanium transistor equivalents that don't cost an arm and a leg.
i'm trying to grab 2-3 of them for some 5-star SD-1 mods but i don't really want to drop $8 ea. + shipping when i haven't found them to be all that impressive.
can be NOS or new stock, i don't really care, just wondering if there is a cheaper equivalent closer to the $4 range. |

Hi Zentropa.
Know the story about hens teeth?
I have a very small collection that I have carried all thu. my life.
I managed to find my collection in really old Transistor radios of that era. If it's got a real leather carry case, them it's more likely, that you will find some germanium trannies inside.
But remember that these typically had only had 6 or 10 transistors in them, in total.
You are more likely to get Jap. trannies like the 2SBxxx types.
Another good source: Make contact with your local "Ham Radio" group, the older guys, probably still have a stash, that they have totally forgotten about.
And very old surplus army equipment, even old pocket sized hearing aids from that era, usually have a couple of trannies.
Make friends with the guys at the local Dump, or recycle center, beg them for all the old sh!tty radios & valve-tranny hybrid TV's.
Now you know more of my secrets... Goods luck
Regards Dr. Bob

guessing that's either a parable or something old that i have no clue about... so no.
i had a few AM only transistor radios when i was young but those are long gone...
i honestly just have no idea what type of equivalent an OC44 transistor has... i know it's PNP, but none of the other specs on it mean much to me. i don't even know what PNP is hehe.
i feel like smallbear is intentionally vague when it comes to these: http://www.smallbearelec.com/Categories.bok?category=Germanium+Transistors
i stopped by a large surplus electronics shop today that had a few bins of metal cannister and glass cased transistors today but they had really nothing listed on em.
would most germanium transistors perform equivalently? or are there certain specs that must be met?

Since your using the germanium transistor in the clipping section, and it doesn't work as part of the signal path, you could use an ol' PNP germanium transistors. Install some sockets and try out different ones.
Someone used a NTE158 Germanium transistor in their Range Master in place of the OC44 |
