Can't see Gibson being that stupid...how could they sell the guitars afterwards by advertising it was Madagascar rosewood used in the fingerboard etc..if it's illegal to import it....? possibly they bought it off a supplier who turned out to be not too honest or didn't check carefully enough to see where it was coming from,a bit like the counterfeit electricial supplies Dr Bob was writing about a while back.... unless Gibson thought they could get away with saying it was NOS from their stockpile,if they were that stupid and greedy they deserve everything they get.... |

I think Gibson, and their batch of lawyers which is what I am sure a lot of the money in the price of a Gibson pays for, will probably claim that they had no knowledge of the German supplier buying illegal wood from another supplier as its probably the suppliers obligation to keep up with the chain of custody regarding where it came from and where, and Gibson is just merely the "victim" who got caught up in a suppliers wrongdoing...Unless its Gibson VS. PRS, Gibson usually comes out winning...
Will they go out of business over this? I doubt it. Will Gibson prices get even higher? Most likely, because they will have to pay for all these lawyers and then have to have different suppliers, which will most likely cost more too. I say get your Gibsons now...You may soon see Pre-Raid and After-Raid Gibsons, much like Pre-CBS era Fenders. |

update: Gibson's statement "Gibson Guitar is fully cooperating with agents of the United States Fish & Wildlife Service as it pertains to an issue with harvested wood. Gibson is a chain of custody certified buyer who purchases wood from legal suppliers who are to follow all standards. Gibson Guitar Chairman and CEO [Henry Juszkiewicz] sits on the board of the Rainforest Alliance and takes the issue of certification very seriously. The company will continue to cooperate fully and assist our federal government with all inquiries and information," the company's statement said. |

What do they mean by it? That they didn't know it was a protected specie or something? Or maybe they bought it thinking it was mahogany? If they really take so seriously the certification of wood then they failed big time. |

The Madagascar rosewood is probably used in their reissue models to replace the Brazilian rosewood (endangered since 1968 or so)..
This second article doesn't make sense, as I'm sure Gibson wouldn't put this wood on one of these lower-range FSC-cert. guitars, and a custom-shop model probably wouldn't limit itself to wood selection from FSC sources.
The grade of mahogany has been slowly declining since about 2005 across the Gibson line.. I handle a lot of these guitars, and a bunch are now showing up with two-piece bodies (IMHO not appropriate for a Gibson LP), even those which are chambered.. ?! The custom shop models show it the most, since they used to have an incredibly rich and deep-grained mahogany (like the 50s ones, ask Kittenface - his Jr. will have that kind of grain) - but now seem to just have the most balanced pieces of wood from the rest of the line.
I'm interested to see how this plays out. |
