Can anyone recommend any good synths or midi controllers? I want to get into the keys and I'm not sure what the best place to start is. Some friends recommend synths like the Microkorg as the perfect choice, others swear by midi controllers. Any thoughts from the forum?

I moved from synths to midi controllers years ago... seems to me that something like Cubase (which I have) offers VaSTly more possibilities with soft instruments than a mere "real" keyboard.

Of course, I could be wrong

My #1 piece of hardware synth has to be my Moog Little Phatty

The Novation XioSynth 25 seems versatile to control a DAW

I wish I had seen the Akai MPK49 before I bought my MPC500

The Line6 Pod Studio KB37 is pretty cool

Here's the next controller on my list

Korg's new nanoKey shown at NAMM'08 is way cool but almost free

Of course the microKorg is an awesome little synth w/Vocoder

In short, I'd probably want a 25-key with lot of sliders or endless knobs on my computer desk & either a 37 or 49 anywhere else. M-Audio is too cheap for me.

You can't go wrong with a full on synthesiser though.

Most DAWs will do MIDI through the piano roll right? Sonar, Cubase, Ableton, Audition, GarageBand, Logic Pro, Nuendo, Pro Tools, Digital Performer, & Reaper are the main choices; Reaper is FREE.

FL Studio (Fruity Loops) seems to be one of the best pattern-based sequencers around. Isn't Sony Acid Pro one of the best loop-based?
