Hello everyone; this is my first ever posting here, I hope I am formatting it properly. I just bought an original Boss PH-1 Phaser, serial# 8800, which dates it to 1979. I got it for $30cdn from a musician who had owned it for a number of years and was moving on to new equipment. What puzzles me about the pedal is this: It has what seem to be non original knobs, but the posts that they fit on are smooth, and not knurled to fit the regular knobs? Also, the LED indicator only lights up when you stomp on the pedal, and goes out when you release...does this unit have a momentary LED? My last question concerns the "trim" adjustment inside the pedal; the only thing I can see that might be this feature is a white box/round piece on the circut(sp) board with what appears to be a phillips slot in the center. I tried inserting a screwdriver, and gently turning it, to no avail. I don't want to turn it too hard, for fear that it is not what I think it is, and damaging the board. If anyone out there has any thoughts on the matter, could you please let me know? As you might have guessed, I'm no tech guy! Oh, and as far as running the pedal, I use it in my Boss BCB-60 pedal board, which is looped through an NS-2, and powered by the stock PSC-100 adaptor. The pedal functions normally, alone, or in combination with other pedals on the board. And talk about sweet tone!!!! wow. Thanks in advance,

Scott

$30 CAD is an incredible price. Apart from the unoriginal knobs it looks practically mint. The knob shafts weren't knurled at the time. Instead the knobs had set screws that locked them into position. Replacement knobs with set screws can often be found on Ebay. If you buy directly from Roland you will get the knobs that will fit a knurled shaft. These will still fit and can be pressed down on to the existing shafts without too much trouble.

Your PH-1 has the momentary LED. The change was made around serial 9000-9100 approximately 3 months after your pedal was made.

The white round component in picture one is indeed the trim pot. If it hasn't been touched in almost 30 years it might be stuck for good and could break if twisted lose. You might however have luck with some electronics cleaner spray. Maybe you can get it going again.

Hi Morir
Welcome to the Forum.

Congratulations on getting a very old (SS) Silver Screw PH-1, and in great looking condition.

I know it probably sounds like a dumb question,
But why would you want to mess with the adjustment of the internal trim-pot?
When the pedal is as you say, "has such a sweet tone".

You also mentioned:
As you might have guessed, I'm no tech guy!

Sorry if it sounds harsh Morir,
but if it ain't broken don't try to fix it.

To set the trim-pot properly, other than, roughly by ear,
you will need some equipment, especially a pink or white noise generator, & a CRO Cathode Ray Oscilloscope.

Please don't think I was having a dig at you,
we all know, you have to ask questions to learn.

Just please don't readjust the internal trimmers, you might mess up a really nice pedal-s, & have some difficulty in resetting them.

Tell us what other Pedals & gear you own & use.

Nice photos Morir.
Any chance you could upload a closeup pic of the circuit board from the top component side, and maybe from the solder track side.

I was given a very old "Melos Phaser" by my brother in law, this weekend, & it does need to be adjusted, the phasing sounds like it's lop-sided & running on a sawtooth wave form, rather smoothly, from a Sine or Triangular wave form.

Regards Dr. Bob

Thanks very much to both of you, for answering all my questions! And Bob, of course you are right, Why should I tinker when it already sounds great. Probably because I never outgrew the need to touch/tinker/play with everything to see how it works. ;) Rest assured, I will not mess further with the pedal. I know that I got it for a crazy price, but the fellow was a musician, and wasn't interested in making a killing, just passing it on. Besides, I didn't know the value of it either, till I got it home...I just loved the sound. Here is the original add that I answered:

hope it's ok to post url's; if not, my apologies.

As for my gear, the pedals I run are as follows: I have a BCB-60 looped through an NS-2 that includes: PH-1, BD-2, DS-1, MT-2, Danelectro BLT Slap Echo, and SD-1. it's connected to a smaller box with an RC-2, TU-2, and CE-5. They are connected to a couple of VOX ADVT amps, but I also have a little Epiphone all tube amp that I use. for guitars I have a Gibson SG Standard, Tokai Love Rock(Korean), Tokai Breezysound(Japanese), Jackson SLSMG, Gretsch G5120, and an Epiphone LP Junior.

thanks again for all your help; this is a great website!

That's funny. I also found my PH-1 on Craigslist, and for a great price:
