I'm not sure how many folks around here are Voivod fans, but their guitarist Denis D'amour passed away last weekend of colon cancer. Denis was an avid Boss fan; I have an old (early '90s) issue of Guitar for the Practicing Musician where he extolled the virtues of Boss pedals (transcription here: http://voivod.net/info/interviews/1993_12_Guitar_Interview.php). Voivod played some of the most mindbending progressive and thrash metal around, and I hope that their final album, which was heavily demoed but never 'properly' recorded, is released as a testament and tribute to Denis.

Rest in peace, Denis....

While i'm not a fan of Voivod (I just never got around to listening to them). I'm sad to hear that Denis passed away. I know that they were an underground band and that Jason Newsted was a huge fan, and helped resurect the band in the past few years, even joining them as their bass player. It's a sad thing that since they were starting to gain alot of acceptance that this had to happen.

Rest in peace Denis. May you be jamming with Cliff Burton and John Bonham in heaven.

RIP Denis D'amour.

I never listened to Voivod but the band name sounds very familiar. I may have to look them up now. Thanks for the link to the interview. He certainly had an interesting effect setup.

I was never a big fan, but I really liked a couple of tracks. Piggy was always a super creative musician though, and it's always saddening to hear about anyone passing away from a cause like this. It's a damn shame.

R.I.P. man.

I was depressed for a week when I found out that Frank Zappa died from Colon Cancer. Didn't George Harrison die from the same thing?

I'm not sure about George Harrison, but it was prostate cancer that felled FZ. I was really depressed when he died as well. The common denominator between FZ and Denis D'amour, at least, was that the cancer was so far advanced by the time it was detected, there was nothing that could be done about it. as I rapidly approach the 'old' age of 35, the importance of early detection in cases like this cannot be understated....

if anyone is interested in checking out Voivod, I would start with "Nothingface"; it is widely considered to be their best work, but is out of print in the USA. beyond that, "Dimension Hatross," "The Outer Limits," and their most recent selt-titled CD (the one with Jason Newstead) are worth checking out; any of those CDs would be a good intro to Voivod. IMHO, their music seemed to become less 'weird' (progressive?) as the band got older, but the lyrics seemed to get better (more direct, less sci-fi)...
