| Does anyone believe that playing by ear is better than playing by written strict scored music, when it comes to modulation effects, particularly chorus, flanger, phaser? In order to hear and compensate for the effect at its optimum value? |

Hi Bassman 100!
I don't have an answer to your question, but wondered if I could take the thread sideways for a minute...
Do you have a Bassman 100? I have one on loan from the local music store and am interested in opinions before I make the decision to buy or return.

I too am not 100% on what you mean..i'm an ear player, never learned to read music but i'm not sure how an effect like chorus would sound any better one way or the other..possibly a flanger or a phaser might sound better on certain parts rather than being left on all the time.......Pat Metheny the jazz guitarist uses two time delays to create a natural 'chorus' effect that he leaves on all the time and it doesn't seem to affect how he plays if he's jamming or reading..... |

Hi Laurie, To answer your question, yes I have the Bassman 100. Problem with my forum layout today - I can only see answered posts by pressing "print" ? what am I doing wrong?
Anyway, I have had several compact bass combos - this is by far the best. I'm using it with a Fender Jazz, Epiphone Viola & Tanglewood Viola Bass. I choose it because I love bottom end very pure clean deep bass. However as you will see it's capable of going to bright slap bass if you wanted. It lacks in volume on its own, but improves vastly with my GT6-B & (ME50-B, but not as good.) It's amazing when D.I. to the PA is used, I love it when required. Mine is 12 months old. The master volume gets dirty & needs rapid movement up/down before switching on to eliminate this. Its physical weight is light, but it is more awkward to carry due to its shape. I use a foldable trolley some for venues. It fills an entire room with sound. I love its wedge monitor shape. It has never let me down; I have stopped carrying a backup amp. It is the first bass amp that I can honestly say sounds excellent with keyboards & acoustic guitar. I am interested to hear your views.

Hi I don't explain myself to well I suppose. Perhaps it's me. I find listening to the lyrics and the effect when playing that I am been distracted by the chorus - as if sometimes it doesnt fit with the written score. & yes your right with the power chord statement, in their case not listening for what else is happening around them, musically, not acquiring the skill of making room or clashing with for fellow musicians, because it's strictly by score, must not miss a millisecond. When I play totally clean, I have no problems, but I love subtle effects. When I play with others who play by ear, there are no problems using effects. It's enhanced by a natural musicianship.

Hi Bassman 100!
I didn't "get" your reply unitl I realised that Fender do a current combo called a Bassman 100. The one I have on loan (to buy/return) is a 1972 silverface head, so I guess we can't really compare notes
Thanks for the thoughtful review of the new one though!
