| Is there any sound quality/tonal difference between a DD-3 version 1 with the big chip, and the version 2A with the smaller surface mount chip? I have a line on a 2A that's in new condition, but I don't want it if it isn't as good as a big chip version. |

svengali says stay with the large chip, get rid of the small. older technology equals lower bit rate equals a bit grainy sound. Guitar loves grainy sound. if you are using keyboard, perhaps stay with small chip.
I am only surmising here..i have a dd2(two of), and do not like sound of dd5-6. I also have a line 6 echo pro rack, yet i prefer the dd2..but, i prefer a little cheap chinese non boss delay pedal to all of the above..

| It absolutely makes a difference, my DD-3 (without the big chip) sounds like crap. So I'm either gonna end up modding it or selling it so I can get an older DD-3 or a DD-2. |

What's really going to be painful about this (if I'm reading Andreas' information correctly) is that both the 1 and the 2A have "external" adapter jacks, meaning that -- unless you were precisely certain about serial numbers -- you'd have to open up the pedal to be able to tell them apart. Mabye we'll get lucky and the occasional eBayer will do this voluntarily and make note of it as a selling feature, i.e. "big chip DD-3, just like the more expensive DD-2", to get more and higher bids (assuming that DD-2s start to increase in price down the road as they increase in scarcity).
This was actually why I specifically fought for DD-2s on the auction block when I got mine, to take the guesswork out of it...

I might have to look for a DD-2 as well, because the few Jap DD-3's I've found on eBay where the owner actually took pics of the board all had the small chip in them.
DD-2's usually aren't in the best shape when you can find them, but I'm starting to think it might be fun and repaint one a-la-Analogman or otherwise. |
