Was it a mistake to create a mode dedicated to Bypass, since you can bypass the effect by simply switching pedal on or off?

With it being an unpopular pedal at the time, did it also have a design mistake?

As a pedal for copying the sound of what you can do with a traditional vintage trem the VB-2 is excellent, among with its ability to get some uncommon sounds.

My only wish is that the pedal could stay in downtuned mode for a while, but then we get into Digitech Whammy pedal territory.

I have always supposed that this was because there was no two-way switch around for Boss, and that it look a bit more impressive, but Im not sure of course

I agree from a guitarist's perspective, it's useless. However, a keyboardist using it may want hand-control over the rate and depth, and turning the knob to BYPASS might be simpler than hand-pressing the treadle. It's the only thing I could come up with..

I always thought they must have had 10,000 three way switches in stock so wanted to use them.

That is an interesting observation, and my feeling is you are right as it probably was a cheaper option than designing a new 3-way control just for one pedal.

Uniquely, with the VB-2, the BBD (delay chip) in the VB-2 is always in the signal path, that way when you turn the Vibrato on/off, you dont hear any stutter or break in the audio, just like if you applied manual vibrato.

BBDs create a lot of noise, and because of this they put in a Bypass mode, which is more like normal bypass of a Boss pedal, so that your signal wouldn't suffer too much, if you weren't using the VB-2 for a while.
